☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments As some german publishers do not list page counts for their ebooks and I'm reading a lot of them and using Calibre all the time I finally thought of installing the page count plugin.

But which way of counting the pages is the correct one?
Saw it might make huge differences in which preinstalled one I choose.
There are "paragraphs APNX (exactly)", "Adobe Digital Editions" and "Calibre ebook viewer" as choices.
(don't even know what APNX means)

Is there a way GR prefers?
(yes I know to mention it in note then but the help topic doesn't mention the prefered counting method)

Miriam | 1831 comments Count Pages plugin is the one mentioned in the librarian manual, not sure if there are others that have been approved.
It is not an automatically installed part of Calibre, but it is a free plugin.

If the publisher does not provide a page number, you may estimate the page count using a tool such as Calibre's Count Pages plugin. Be sure to leave a librarian note that this is an estimate and that the page number should be changed if the publisher releases a specific page count.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Yeah I do have installed that plugin.

But within that there are different methods to calculate the pages.
Automatically chosen was that APNX which gave 515 pages, trying Adobe Digital Editions (which looks common as I'll need ADE for DRM purposes) brings only 381 pages. (publisher gives 448 for HC, 461 for PB, Worldcat gives on the ebook page only a "published as "Die Schwester" HC 350 pages)
ebook in question e.g. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

As that is a quite huge difference I'd be curious if there is a method GR sees as best.

Miriam | 1831 comments I don't remember reading anything that specifies, but when I tested it with ebooks that the publisher listed a page count the ADE version came closer that the others. I would note that you have to have an ePub version to use the ADE setting.

Sandra | 31413 comments My best guess is Adobe because I use PDF's a lot and that is what comes up when I purchase them. PDFs are also an acceptable page count according to Rivka.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I find this comment from Rivka:

However, the only formats for which book-in-hand does not trump publisher/Amazon/etc. data are ebooks. User settings, precise model of ereader, and other variables can mean that the same book on your ereader and mine have different page counts. Therefore, for ebooks (including Kindle editions), the page number should come from the publisher.

The publisher does not have a page count listed. But they do have a word count, which I divided by 250 for an estimated page count of 241.

I believe when that note was added to the Manual, the plugin only had one method -- not 3. It sounds like the current ADE method may be the closest to what used to be the only option.

Keep in mind that using the Calibre plugin or the word count method should only ever be done when there is no way to get the real (publisher) count, and the change note (and/or a Librarian Note) should clearly state that it is an estimate via (whatever method used) and that if the real count becomes available from the publisher, it should be added instead.

Renske | 12220 comments This makes me happy if we can use ADE, I have several ebooks without page numbers on my shelves.

Oh yes I will :)
I'd like to have a non estimated pagecount instead of the Calibre one - so I'd really happily change it if it once is available.

and as official libraries are ok for data, would my library be ok for the ebook pages? They do sometimes list some - and even for the above mentioned book http://www4.onleihe.de/thuebibnet/fro...
(listed there as "Umfang: 314 S." which means 314 pages)
(I assume they don't count as they are not the publisher but was worth the try ...)

But no problem if the library is not ok, I can stick with the ADE Calibre count in cases nothing else is available (could have thought of that years earlier as I'm using Calibre for ages).
German ebooks are often missing in the database, so lots to do there by going through my reader :)

Thanks a lot for the info rivka.
And ADE makes sense as ebooks here mostly use that if they are DRM protected epubs.

A library is not a publisher, and when the publisher count is available it should always take priority for an ebook. But I see no reason a library's estimate should be any worse than Calibre's or the word count method -- again, with a note, and replacing if the publisher's becomes available.

This is wonderful news. I do see ebooks without page numbers and have no publisher count for them. Thank you!

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Is the note ok that way? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... (or too lenghty? :D)

Renske | 12220 comments I used more or less Rivka's text and added 'For more information see the librarian group.'

(My page count for last year got up with nearly 1,000 pages and I have not yet done all ebooks on my shelves.)
