So, I'm trying to read about 2-3 kids books and 2-3 adult books at a time. Reading multiple books at once is new to me, but it definitely has some benefits!

On the kids' books, I'm reading The Mighty Miss Malone and I'm getting ready to start See You at Harry's. On the YA/Adult side, I'm reading Mockingjay, Better Next Time, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and I'm re-reading The Fault in Our Stars. It's a busy month.

I'll comment on all of them once I finish, but I was really surprised by how much I'm enjoying The Hunger Games trilogy. I would have never picked up a book about teenagers fighting to the death, but these books have some amazing commentary on societal structure, power and control, and what makes us tune out to the human experience of others.

The Fire. Confusing, intense, the series is overall going downhill.

Just finished The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and going to start Stargirl. Finished Mockingjay and Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (and Other Concerns) but still reading all the others. Trying to pack 'em in before school starts!

Re-reading The Curse of the Campfire Weenies and Other Warped and Creepy Tales; it's taking me a little longer because I'm reading it out loud and it's hard to find time for it. :)

I'm currently reading One for the Murphys as my class read-aloud. This book is great for that - it has short chapters and the kids really connect to the characters.

I read a lot of things and forgot to post them here....oops. :)

No worries Raevyn! As for me, I'm reading See You at Harry's and An Abundance of Katherines; I'm still reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Mighty Miss Malone. I'm off work this week, so maybe I'll get some good reading in!

I'm getting ready to read Because of Mr. Terupt. However, I need to choose a book for read-aloud (we just finished Because of Winn-Dixie). For 4th grade, would you recommend Wonder, Out of My Mind, or Because of Mr. Terupt?

I loved that book. I found it funny that most of my kids have no idea who Al Capone is except for Scarface references, for some reason....

Lisa Stoll | 2 comments Have read both Wonder and Out the My Mind as read alouds- both fabulous. Wonderful class discussions

I'm currently reading Wonder with my class. It's great for POV and has really short chapters. As I have a few bullies in my class, it's a great perspective book as well.

Aaand I'm finally back to this thread. Re-reading Earth to Matthew, which could make a good read-aloud if they don't mind something different [plotline=average, but it's dated and written in third person present tense].

Julia Flaherty | 7 comments I am reading and enjoying The Luck Uglies by Paul Durham. I am particularly interested in effective literary world-building in right now, and this is a new example to look at.

I'm reading Kizzy Ann Stamps, which has won several national awards. It could be a good read aloud, especially in the context of the desegregation and the civil rights movement.

For YA books, I just finished Matched and I'm in the middle of Speak. Matched is YA dystopian romance without real meat or substance; probably not bad for 6th - 9th grade girls. Speak seems to be more substantial and is probably a good read for any junior high/high school student.

Julia Flaherty | 7 comments I haven't read Speak, but I have really, really enjoyed a lot of other books by Laurie Halse Anderson. Maybe enjoyed enjoyed isn't exactly the right word. Her YA stuff can be particularly gut-wrenching. Let us know what you think of Speak, and I may put it on my reading list. I put a temporary moratorium on reading her stuff after finishing Wintergirls left me feeling so emotionally drained. Her characters go through some rough stuff. But well done. Very well done.

I've been reading the Seekers series; I skipped Fire in the Sky because I've read it and I don't currently own it, and now a few weeks/days later I'm a little more than halfway through The Melting Sea. The novels seem to be progressively getting A) better in terms of writing and B) Duller and less interesting, so I'm torn as to whether I like them or not. :/

The group hasn't been active for a few months! :(

I'm reading This Star Won't Go Out The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl by Esther Earl .

We're back in school now, so hopefully we'll pick back up! I finally read one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books over the summer. It's not as bad as I had anticipated, but I do think Dork Diaries are done better.

Kari | 2 comments I'm currently reading Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick. So far it seems good (I'm only about 1\4 into it).
