Author sort names

I don't know if this has already been discussed, but I can't find an answer to my question here or in the manual.

How should names like John of Damascus and Bernard of Clairvaux be sorted? On their first name or on the place name?

Personally, I would say first name (that is how I sorted John of Damascus), but I am not sure if that is correct. Bernard is sorted on Clairvaux. That may be just be a case of automatic sorting, though.

First name for sure. "Damascus" etc is no family name.
