It took me days to digest this book. I have come away thinking that the ending makes the reader question what happened in the book and by doing so has the reader empathize with the torment of the mentally ill mother/wife/professor felt.

I had the same reaction. I'm of the opinion that very little in the book actually happened and that the book is intended to help the reader empathize with the mentally ill.
