I was on the fence about doing a challenge this year but when gourmetkat suggested it, I thought we should give it a try.

The books from different continents was inspired by a recent conversation about how many there are with a friend from Europe.
And yes, I realize that Oceania is not a continent but it's a bit more inclusive than using the continent of Australia.

Good luck everyone! Enjoy the 2018 challenge.

Jocelyn H | 1 comments Oh, good. I was hoping for a new reading challenge, too. I look forward to participating! (I was bookworm 101 in the old Book Buzz format. Hello!)

I was thinking about Where'd You Go, Bernadette because Antarctica makes a significant appearance. Sadly, I've already read that one...maybe something about Antarctic exploration or research? But penguins are another possibility...

I've got my first one.

19. About mental health.
The Kevin Show: An Olympic Athlete’s Battle with Mental Illness. It's about Kevin Hall, a world class sailor who is diagnosed bipolar while at university. He is afflicted with something called The Truman Show disorder--in his manic phases, he believes he is constantly being filmed for some kind of show. It complicates things because as an elite athlete, he is being filmed often in his day to day life.

Really a fascinating book. Mary Pilon, the author was given access to Kevin and his entire family for the book.

I was weeding this afternoon and stumbled across a book set (partially) in Antarctica.

The Comet Seekers

I was looking at fiction subject headings today and found one for #4 about the Spanish flu outbreak in 1918-19.

This is a small list, though. There are more books out there. I've read a few but can't recall the titles.

I don't really read many books about librarians. I do like the parts of the Scott Pilgrim series that take place at Toronto Reference Library and Wychwood Library.

I also enjoy the Librarian in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. He was turned into an orangutan and decided he liked it better that way.

Pratchett has some great quotes about libraries. Here's one:

People were stupid, sometimes. They thought the Library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.

What are your favourite books about libraries and librarians?

Despina | 31 comments An Aegean April, by Jeffrey Siger, published in 2018. Very good read, a mystery. It's set on the Greek Island of Lesvos and the story is focused on solving the murder of a wealthy shipowner who decides to spend his retirement years assisting refugees arriving on his island. He also was planning to use his influence to suggest new ways to the Greek government on how to handle the influx. The human smugglers had other ideas though. Read and find out!

Despina | 31 comments Made into a movie, "Light Between Oceans," by ML Stedman. A heartwrenchig story set in Australia about good people who made less than a sound decision. A box of Kleenex beside you while reading this novel may be a good idea.

Also set in Australia, Oceania.
