question
Unfinished plot lines

Has anyone else noticed the unfinished plot lines in this book? For example:
1) Malcolm spending heaps of time figuring out how to make anti unscrewable screws, and having some given to him by Mr Taphouse. He never actually used them for anything so it was unnecessary to focus on them.
2) The "spangled ring". What even was that? I was expecting it to mean something about Dust, but it never got explained. It just randomly happened once in a while and distracted from the story.
Does anyone have any explanations/answers I missed while reading/other plot lines I forgot to mention?

From pullman, part of an interview about book: We will see more of that and Lyra will learn about it and so will Malcolm. One thing that is important is Malcolm’s migraine — the “spangled ring.” I have that from time to time. I’ve always been curious about that and science would explain it in a certain way but there is more to it and we are going to find out more about it too.

It's book one in a series. I expect that some of the plot lines will continue or be explained in the later books.
I get the migraine aura-without-headache every few years, and it's exactly as described. Except without the deep insights or whatever the heck Malcolm seems to feel. They don't connect me with the universe! My guess is Pullman has them, and what the heck?
Totally agreed. Both those subplots went nowhere and did nothing. I'd go further and add in Poseidon and the faeries as well. You've an okayish grounded spy saga/chase sequence and then it becomes supernatural. Hated it.
And the defence 'it'll be explained later' doesn't retroactively change the fact that this book is a bloated overwritten mess.

I agree about the screws. But I disagree about the Aura. I think it was very significant and always appeared right before crucial points of the plot and most of the time they were almost miraculously saved right after that. I believe they had to do something with the Dust and Angels helping them, connecting their consciousness to the consciousness of Malcolm. I find it hilarious that Malcolm mistook the word aura for aurora, which is no coincidence as they have a shared etymology. I expect us to have an explanation for the aura in the next installments of this trilogy, and I don't mind to wait for it. It'a theoretical matter.
But the plot line I wanted to see resolved were the dog-dreams/visions. I half expected Asta to end up as a dog at the end of the book, but then I remembered the dogs surfaced when Malcolm was asleep (not communicating immediately with Asta) or when he pushed himself further away from her. Maybe they represent some of our most savage tendencies and urges while the deamons are the part of our mind that keeps those in check and makes us more human... It is something I wanted to see explained more in this book.

Hey, that's right, I forgot about the dog dreams. They were so weird, you're right that they seemed to be leading somewhere but never did. Never consi

I think the fairies are a set up for the sequel. I'm not so sure about the screws or the aura, though. If Malcolm shows up again, maybe they will go somewhere.
Did we ever find out how Mrs Coulter and Bonneville were conntected? She seemed to know him and was clearly worried when she heard he was after Lyra, but she was never mentioned again. Did I miss something while reading?
Also, was it ever explained why/where to Mr Taphouse disappeared?

I still want to know what the deal with Bonneville and his daemon was. He hated it and beat it? Why? And why did Bonneville want Lyra? Was it just mental issues or something he read on the alethiometer? And we followed Hannah for part of the book, but then never returned to her. I wanted to find out what she was up to for the last half of the book while everyone is searching for Malcom. I know they'll be a new book soon, but it's supposed to take place 20 years later.
