He smelled it too, making him sick to his stomach, knowing what would have happened here. "I don't see him anywhere..." He scanned the ground for footprints amidst the ash.
She picked up what looked like the end of an arm in her mouth, then quickly spat it out messily. "Ash," she growled, annoyed.
She rolled her tongue around inside her mouth, trying to get rid of the taste. She nosed around, found a few small pieces, but very little had survived the force of the explosion and the shrapnel and the fires that had come after.
She rolled her massive shoulders in a shrug. "There many metal pieces. How am I to know if they are from a bomb or from a stove?"
She sniffed the paper. "Injust, it just smells like ash. Everything smells like smoke and ash and fire and iron."
"I think the people who died here are still dead, whether you build them a house or not," she said wryly.
"Why does it matter, Injust?" She began pacing. "What's done is done, whether we remember it or not. And if its important, you'll remember it without someone needing to remind you." She turned to face him. "You've been doing this a lot lately." Her yellow eyes narrowed. "Sacrifice, honor, guilty and innocent. What are you planning, Injust?"
She tackled him to the ground, pinning him there. Careful to keep her claws from piercing his skin, so as to keep his precious conditions. "And what is that, Injust?" she growled, her eyes locked on his.
Her claws extended, just a little bit. "You've never kept things from me like this before, Injust." She was angry.
"I'm going to blow everything up, there will be nothing left but ashes and ruins," she said as she shifted into a mirror image of him, in a perfect mimicry of his voice and expression.
She licked her lips--which was rather disconcerting, since she still looked like Injust, metal apparatus and all.
