I just read "Haus voller Wolken" by Jan Stressenreuter and would like to indicate genres it falls under (none are currently listed): contemporary, fiction, GLBT, GERMAN-literature. I read that Goodread genres are determined by how people assign books to genres, but how do I do that for this book please? thanks Peter

The best way is to add those shelves descriptions to your own account and make sure the book is on each one. Even one person shelving them will cause that to appear in the list of genres (though you may have to wait a day or two to see it on the book's page because of caching.)
Genres are populated by members shelves. Usually it takes more than 1 person, but sometimes 1 is all you need.
Assigning genres to individual books/works is not something Goodreads Librarians have the ability to do -- or at least, not any more than any other user.
Goodreads Librarians have the ability to group shelves with similar names into genres, although to some degree that is limited to superlibrarians.

I'm a fairly new Librarian, and I've been looking for how to do what you mention. Is there a thread or tutorial somewhere which describes how to do this?

ETA I think the only thing regular librarians can do is edit the name and description of the genre.
Hi lethe, thanks for replying :)I have discovered the possibility to edit description of genre (shelf name) pages, but I was hoping there were functionality to do more that I had not yet noticed. Like edit the quick links (Related Genres section) and modifiy/update 'contributing tags'.
Yes that facility is there, but I don't know if non-Supers can do it as I didn't try before getting the tap... :)
Hi Emy, (thanks for your help with all my deletion requests btw!) :) Do you know if it is possible to request edits for tags/quick links here (or in the GR Feedback group, or elsewhere), or are genre pages locked permanently as they are? I've never seen such requests around, so as a new member I might have missed decisions made in earlier years.
Peter, I still feel bad for stealing your thread from you, so here's a screenshot of how to add genre information to books you read. Genres on Goodreads are actually bookshelf names from all users on the site. So whatever you name your shelves, and then add a book to those shelves, will show up as 'genre' on the book page (with a delay of 1 day or so).

Even if you make up a nonsense shelf name and add a few books to it, Goodreads will create a genre page with the books tagged with that exact shelf name. (Again with a few days delay.)

Happy shelving!
I thought that can't be right, but then checked with my weird named bookshelf :Dhttps://www.goodreads.com/genres/oh-n...
So cool!
As I stated earlier, this is not really something specific to Goodreads Librarians.
