JW (westcoastbias) | 10 comments Binti Series by Nnedi Okorafor

More than personal reviews, better than "you checked this out yet?" private messages - let's take a stab at a group discussion of Nnedi Okorafor's Binti trilogy.

Some of us are starting with the 100pg. Binti novella, others are ready to move on to book two, Home. Those in the latter camp, use your own discretion on posting with or without the spoiler tag at first. Shouldn't take but a few days for those of us starting at ground zero to catch up, I think.

Finally, here's hoping we keep our momentum, and slide right into book 3, The Night Masquerade (to be released Jan 16th). Figure we'll collectively agree on a 'discussion start date' for that one, based on how active the thread stays.

Happy reading. And post like you'll vote in 2020 - early and often.

JW (westcoastbias) | 10 comments Diggin it. Just under the halfway mark on Binti. Intro section led me to think Okorafor was spinning a pure allegory - that initial, complex, wearying, Jackie Robinson experience so many of us have had to endure (or the first of many...sigh).

But then came the action ~> thriller sequence, and the imaginative sci-fi ideas, spicing up that familiar stew. I'm on board.

JW (westcoastbias) | 10 comments pretty, pretty, pretty good...

Finished Binti. Interested in others' thoughts. The first reaction -- if I had a tween or teen daughter who took after her nerdy dad's personality or interests, I'd feel blessed to give this story to her. Same way I never had a protagonist to ID with in my younger days.

That said, not all that gritty, not a hope-beyond-the-mountain-of-cynicism adult Sci Fi read. YA definitely.

What ya think?

Zanna (zannastar) | 5 comments Sorry for flaking :( a bunch of work piled on just as I finished Home so I didn't find time to come and talk about it. I thought it was excellent. Did anyone else get onto Home?

Alanna Harris | 1 comments I finished Binti over the weekend and moved on to Home. Loved the novella. So far with Home, I like the depth and exploration of the effects of the events in the first book on Binti in her journey
