In the book's darkest moments, one of Zoe's stuffed animals—the zebra—comes to life and threatens him. What does the zebra symbolize?

I thought this was one of the silliest parts of the book, but I assume Enzo was having a nightmare, and the Zebra represented the efforts of Zoe’s grandparents to take her away from Denny and him.
