If he likes Michael Grant he might also really like Patrick Ness, particularly The Knife of Never Letting Go. Those series had similar types of writing.
I also read a book several years ago cheap on my kindle that is very similar to The Maze Runner and Divergent called The Park Service. I believe it is a trilogy, but there may be a novella as well. It's about a community living underground because they believe a nuclear war has made the Earth's surface uninhabitable. When an accident puts the protagonist above ground he discovers that not only is the Earth safe, it is flourishing without humans destroying it. It was a really interesting dystopian with lots of action and a killer ending, but it also sends a strong message about what we're doing to our planet without sounding preachy or annoying. I never did read the other two books so I can't tell you if they are as good, but you can get a sample of the first from Amazon to see if he likes it.

The Missing series is another great time travel series. The first book is Found. It's about a boy, Jonah, who receives a letter that tells him that he is one of the missing and that "They're coming back to get you". It involves the FBI, an airplane that appeared out of nowhere, time travel, and the truth beyond Jonah's past.
The Enemy is similar to the Gone series. It's also about a community where there are no adults. In this one, the adults either died or turned into zombies because of a disease and the teens and children have to fend for themselves.
I don't know if he's read the Tunnels series, which was another book series I read around this time. It's about a boy, Will, whose father disappears and, in searching for his father, discovers a secret underground society.
I hope that he will enjoy one of these series!

Maybe he likes the 'I am number four' series. I haven't read Gone, and I doubt it resembles it, but it has a male protagonist, isn't very dramatic or romantic (I don't know what he likes) and is science fiction for young adults. I guess it has 7 books and some short stories inbetween.
I only know about one time travelling book and I haven’t got around to it yet but it’s called Invictus. I have read other books from Ryan Graudin and enjoyed them so hopefully it will be the same

Episode 9 is due out any minute!
