there's apparently a 2nd short story included... not sure if it's available anywhere else... I might read the free one tho

Do you have access to Hoopla in France/Sweden (that's your 2nd account right)?... that's where I'm getting the audiobooks from...

Did some digging... the extra story is called "Nine and a Half", and "is about the nine and a half times Archie saved Houndstooth's life" apparently... it's exclusive to the omnibus edition, as far as I can tell...

message 703: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Nope, no access to Hoopla infortunately :/

Virginie wrote: "Nope, no access to Hoopla infortunately :/"

Just thought to check wikipedia... areas served: US & Canada... oops...

It's a pretty popular service, but it's a real drain on library funds, from what I've read online... my library allows 5 items per month per cardholder, but also has a limit on how many people can check things out each day, so they don't go over budget... so I have to do most of my checkouts around midnight... any time I've tried to check something out around noon the limit has been reached already... so I assume it gets hit shortly after sunrise when people get up and check things out...

message 705: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Yeah... Lots of cool book services are only available in northern America. The Tor bookclub comes to mind, with its free ebook each month.

I'm only able to get by with my "account" with a library in Sweden. It's not really one per se, but we reached mutual understanding. I get access to the digital content (despite not being a Swedish citizen nor even residing in the country anymore), and I feed them information on what to buy for their Fantasy section since they have no Fantasy/SF reader on their staff.

message 706: by Virginie (last edited Apr 05, 2019 05:41AM) (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Ok, I got the audiobooks of the two novellas! I don't have the omnibus-only short though (and don't plan of buying the whole thing just for it) :p
Since you read a lot faster than me, I'm starting right away. You'll catch up in no time :) Do we ask for a thread or simply discuss here?

message 707: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35643 comments Mod
We could make a thread over the the Standalone folder maybe... by the time the mods make a thread we'll probably be done...

I'll probably start tomorrow, after I finish Raven's Strike and Honor's Flight

20% into River of Teeth... main thought: how smart are hippos?

message 710: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35643 comments Mod
Finished River of Teeth... halfway thru Taste of Marrow already...

Hippos are for sure the best part of this... altho the ferals are probably scarier than I give them credit...

Houndstooth is also probably the least sympathetic of the characters... especially after (view spoiler)

message 711: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Ok, I binged the whole thing! I agree with you, the hippos are really the best part! I loved how they all had their own personality and yet are all similarly stubborn :p

The feral hippos though.... I would be so terrified if they were a thing...

Did you like the narrator? It's probably 'cause I'm not a native speaker, but I found the southern drawl very distracting :O

I remember we also talked about LPQ and you said you were waiting on a travelling book...did you receive it? I'm still in the first half and if you're in the mood for an impromptu BR, I know you can easily catch us up...all of us are at different points...Narilka finished the third book, I think...Bea and I are lagging the others who are just a bit ahead...

Hey... did you ever read Survival Quest?... We were supposed to BR the series back in June, but you weren't around... I tried anyway, and didn't care much for it, so I didn't continue...

Much better LitRPGs out there...

Ah, the traveling book was for Anthony Ryan's Draconis Memoria. Yup, received it :)
I'd love to read LPQ with you but I don't know if I'll have time. My schedule is really hectic these days (my life is in a bit of a uproar) so I don't want to commit to a BR just to flake out on it later :/

I did try the first book of the series. DNF around 60% I think... Don't know if it was the audio format (the reading of the stats quickly annoyed me) or the book itself...

Didn't help that the MC thought healers are just lazy players chilling in the back :O I was so offended hahaha. Keeping idiotic DPS ignoring boss mechanics (or competent ones cutting corners) from dying is a (stressful) full-time job, thank you very much :p

Virginie wrote: "Timelord Iain wrote: "Hey... did you ever read Survival Quest?... We were supposed to BR the series back in June, but you weren't around... I tried anyway, and didn't care much for ..."

For sure... I miss WoW Burning Crusade / Wrath of the Lich King era... the heyday of specialized healers and before LFG destroyed all semblence of teamwork in random dungeons/raids...

I thought the author was offensive to women, as well, especially early on...

I think the main problem with the book, tho, was how boring the plot was... because of the premise, the first book basically had to be boring, since the MC was in a slave penal mining colony...

I think it's also one of those things where the author was basically inventing a new genre, and hadn't figured out how to spice up the boring parts inherent in reading stats all the time...

Life in the North & Stuff and Nonsense both do a better job with that... System Apocalypse (Life in the North) can still be a bit excessive with the stat reading, but Threadbare (Stuff and Nonsense) only tends to mention stats when they matter... and both read out the entire character sheet at the end of the book, so you know the power level of the MC heading into the next book...

You should definitely try those... I really like System Apocalypse, altho it's nearly 2 books behind on audio releases because the narrator Nick Podehl is so busy... and Threadbare is the bestest, most adorable LitRPG trilogy out there (Soo agrees)...

message 728: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Aaaaah, WOTLK... My favorite expansion by far, and the one I played the most! Ulduar and ICC were so much fun :D Back then, you chose your class & spec for the gameplay, now you have to choose a spec for the type of content (Rdruid for 5-man, disc priest for raids, etc) :(

Weirdly, I took more offense at the hunter spitting on healers than women stuff; this one, I'm used to so it doesn't hit me that hard. But insinuating healers are bad players and lazy... :O Takes a special kind of stupid/crazy to voluntarily piss off the player in charge of keeping you alive ;)

Stuff and Nonsense was already in my TBR. Is the narrator for that series good? :)

The woman stuff was just super in your face early in Survival Quest... I couldn't decide if it was because he's russian or what...

OH! Tim Gerard Reynolds is my absolute favorite narrator! He's brilliant as Jalan in the Red Queen's War series (Mark Lawrence).

Virginie | 6109 comments Timelord Iain wrote: "The woman stuff was just super in your face early in Survival Quest... I couldn't decide if it was because he's russian or what..."

I just assumed it was because he's russian :p
But you're right, now that I think about it, he was pretty offensive to women in the beginning... Urgh.

message 733: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35643 comments Mod
Yea... there's overt misogyny, and subtle misogyny... Survival Quest was very in-your-face about it...

I don't always notice the subtle kind... I mean... I'm AWARE of the Bechdel Test, but I don't really think about it much while reading...

message 734: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Yeah... I think I notice the subtle kind as much as any woman would, for the very simple reason that I tend to identify more often with female characters. I certainly don't think about the Bechdel test while reading, and don't particularly like the test to begin with.

I mean... You can have two female side-characters talking about make-up/clothing for half a page. Still very reductive, and yet, that book would pass the test :p

One thing that I like to keep an eye out for is whether there is a female character going through a narrative arc.
