Oh yes, allergies. One of the reasons why I prefer the cold season :)Also, I feel like I'm one of the few people who don't even like the smell of flowers. Natural flowers are still ok, but artificial flower smell in cosmetics always gives me a headache (especially rose smell).
Sunflowers are nice, though, I agree :)
Hey Virginie... I just started The Dark Talent, which I know you read a few months ago...
I think you got some 'splainin' to do... cause I just learned France isn't real... and that everybody but me already knows that...

Bwahahaha! Of course France isn't real! I'm really an alien, sent here to scout and prepare our invasion.

Uh... Virginie?... How does your version of the spreadsheet monthly tallies work?
You have the yearly tallies at the top... then it says your January row just copies the yearly numbers... then February subtracts January from the total (X-X=0)... and then down the list it subtracts the rows above from the total... so isn't it just going to say that January == the total, and February thru October/December == 0?

Ah, I'm simply going to freeze the monthly tally once the month is finished. So when January is done and over, I'll copy-paste-only-values, and then February will be (Total - Read in Jan).I'm doing that because I will have entries that span multiple month (mangas and short stories). That way, the mangas volumes/short stories from anthologies (and various other sources) get assigned to the month I actually read 'em, not the one I finish the last volume of the manga/last short story.

I just kinda lived with that discrepency in 2018... only happened with Bookburners & Superpowereds... I could have always measured partial books, with extra entries, if I'd wanted... but you probably don't want to do that, since your sheet is probably going to be flooded with daily short stories, anyway...

Yeah, I started 2018 with individually logging my manga volumes but it quickly got annoying to do, and was skewing my stats. Now that I'm also reading short stories, it makes more sense to do it that way. And that means I continually get the points as I update.
Are you just going to link to your Short Story spreadsheet, for people that care to see individual pages? With manga & GNs, I assume you can just use the Volumes that collect 6/36 into a single book?
For mangas, I just take (roughly) the page count of the first volume, and multiply it by the number of volumes I read. The mangas sometimes have no entries on GR, or at least no entries for French editions, so that's the easiest way of doing it.I'm pretty sure I'm loosing points that way 'cause volumes tends to be lengthier the longer a series goes on but I can't be bothered to look up every single page count - especially for 30+ long series :p
For the shorts... I guess I could link add the link of my spreadsheet to the rest. The page counts for anthologies and ezines come from GR, and the ones for my own 'homemade' ebooks from a Calibre estimation. Again, I'm not researching the page count of each single shorts, but rather dividing the total page count by the number of shorts I read :p

I'd love to see what your German book swapping group would do with Ship of Theseus... it just arrived in the mail, for the Buddy Read Soo invited me to, and it basically looks like the pictures you posted, only on purpose (on the part of the authors, JJ Abrams & Doug Dorst), and published that way... with the extra bonus of inserted documents, postcards, newspaper clipping, and other extras linked to the story... it's meant to be a stolen high school library book with a hidden mystery that 2 college students delve into while trading the book back and forth through a library bookshelf dropoff location...

You can see the colored pen ink in that image...

and read some in this one, out of context...

I've only just started, but it looks like it'll be super interesting... this and House of Leaves last year, are the only physical books I've purchased in the past 5 years, I think... the experimental nature of the books doesn't translate well to ebooks or audio (altho this book tries... there's an audio of the book within the book, it just skips all the margin stuff and acts like an unsullied copy of the fictional book)...

Uh... yes and no... the book is an experience best completed in a group... it can help you get over the slow / wordy / boring parts and reach the full oddness of the book... and you'll probably miss a ton of hidden aspects of the book without pulling up fan forums during/after... such as the fact that (view spoiler)
You can see the BR Soo, Alex, & I did last year here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

That's pretty cool, I came across it a few times now, but somehow I couldn't bring myself to buy it, as it's rather expensive and I wasn't sure if it's cool enough, I read some mixed reviews... I will just wait for you opinion :D I hope the two of you have a lot of fun!

The last one clearly isn't evil, it's just playing! And I want to rub its belly, even though it will probably kill my hand if I do xD
The other ones are probably on secret missions for their evil sorceress companions :)

Yeah, a BR seems like a good idea with this type of book.

Haha, that must be it, yeah... ;)
Christmas is coming everyone! Do you need to trade for some presents? Cause if yes, I just found the perfect little guy for it!
a new painting by Don Maitz - commissioned by the publisher of a game related book titled Monsters and Magic based in the Netherlands. - It was posted today on reddit.
And I forgot to mention that I love him! :D
I apologise everyone! First of all I head-butted here to post this little pic and to top it off... I killed your thread by doing it. :(Sorry about that!
Lol, you didn't kill the thread. Your demon rat is actually very cute (yeah, I said that). I think people are just having a busy day :-)
Laura wrote: "Christmas is coming everyone! Do you need to trade for some presents? Cause if yes, I just found the perfect little guy for it!"Oooh, I love this! I spent my last Christmas in Cambodia, and specifically Christmas day in a giant market in Phnom Penh, wided-eyed at all the little trinkets!
Laura wrote: "I apologise everyone! First of all I head-butted here to post this little pic and to top it off... I killed your thread by doing it. :(Sorry about that!"
NOOOOO! Diana's right, just busy :D
Come post pics' here any time, lovely!
Oh! Ok. Phew! I got a bit worried there for a while. :) Will keep stalking you then! :D
Cambodia sounds so exotic! Do you have any pics from a market like that? It must have been great.
My trip in Cambodia was amazing! It was great to see the country my mother grew up in (she left because of the Khmer Rouge war). My siblings and I have been trying to convince my mother to show us Cambodia for years so we were SUPER excited :DWe even got to meet some relatives for the first time :)
Oooh, the pictures are looking really nice! I want some of that fruit now :)It must have been really exciting to finally visit your mum's country!
It seems like you had a great time :)
Laura wrote: "I apologise everyone! First of all I head-butted here to post this little pic and to top it off... I killed your thread by doing it. :(Sorry about that!"
Naaaaw Laura, that's not true at all..everyone is just busy with the holidays. I know exactly what it feels like to post a message, wait impatiently for a reply and then feel "socially anxious" and worry whether you made a big gaffe/muffed up or not.
You didn't sweetz.
You're ok.
I love the Tinker-Trader motif...all wanderers...troubadours, tinkers, jesters, gypsies, sailors and spies. Conversely I also simultaneously love the dwellers...hermits, herbalists, recluses, teachers, and writers.
And hey. So cool to see that you have "adopted" the Wars of Light and Shadow. I respect that you don't hold back when something is deeply personal and important to you. In fact, I love that and I'm sure your updates will enrich all our reading. Now this might be a little forward of me for saying...but don't be terrified of Sauron's expertise n all the Malazan stuff...I saw how you were getting nervous...
Malazan is a law unto itself...😂😂😂
We mere mortals must just try our best.
@Virginie...I am particularly entertained by your accompanying commentaries. I am getting a sense of the kind of art styles you like and the themes you enjoy. We have very different visual tastes, only now I'm beginning to understand your (pictorial) tastes better. And I liked that third evil cat...damn sweet! @Soo...Umbrellas 1 was cool!
And here...this is the Cau Vang in the Ba Na, Vietnam. You once posted a picture just like it on my tracker, I remember. It looks like something straight out of a fantasy novel, no? But it is a real actual place we can go to. Sunsets
(view spoiler)
Hey. This is for all the hard work you put in. Everyone was saying how you did a great job with the 2019 spreadsheet. I'll never get to see (I still didn't get Google Sheets 😂)but I will deffo join the appreciation squad!
Me...I love bridges too and I like reading the stories of how the first (iconic) suspension bridges were built...history of architecture, the challenges...
But (for my archaic 😂😂 visual tastes) twisted steel and tempered glass can never compare to old stone, weathered timber...i especially love the Charles Bridge in Prague and all of London's oldest ones.
All those angels and demons...mute witnesses to so many small lives, so many stories...and they've been thru so much + they such fukkdamn REVENANTS.
Such grand and royal dames they are!
In fact, if I ever wrote a love story...I'd write of a very sweet and simple first kiss on an old bridge during the first slight chill of the year...there'd be a bit of swirling fog.
There is something timeless in that meeting of the old and the new in a place that is itself between worlds...no?
😘😘😘
I replied to all of your PMs...did you see? I know I only wrote very short replies and seemed a bit distracted but I was worried all those days abt my brother and sister in law. They have been trying for a baby for a long while now (childhood sweethearts, they've been together almost fifteen years now) and she had a lot of complications + horrible accident with her last attempt...so this was a very fraught birth, she's lost a lot of blood and is still rather weak and in pain so...I hope you understand that I'm REALLY doing my damned best here, Virginie.
Anyway now this has become a very long additional reply post...😄😂😛 but (being me) I will add some more. Hey. Do you take "pictorial" requests? Immediately (I'm impatient) I've made some. Open when you get time.

@Zaara: Hey sweeeety :DYes, we've got quite different tastes in drawings/pictures/illustrations. I like looking at all the pics you post though; takes me out of my comfort zone :D
I LOVE that bridge :O I'm definitely going there at least once in my life :D
I love both the 'new' bridge and the old ones... They admire the newest ones for the feat of architecture and engineering that they are, and the old ones for their timeless beauty and the mind-boggling construction method they required at a time concrete, cranes and such other things did not exist.
Yes, I saw your PMs. I guessed that you were busy being a super aunt; I hope your sister-in-law is getting better!
And YES to pictorial requests! I haven't gone specifically to see Christmas lights yet, but I'll be sure to take pics and post 'em if I do :D
Since it's not my first time in Paris (heck, I even lived there for 6 months), I doubt I'll go do 'touristy' things - still, I'll do my best :p
I did cool things with my bro' and Andrea (his girlfriend) since I arrived. We went to a jazz concert in an underground bar:
I made Christmas cookies with Andrea (well, more like I watched and sneakily ate 'mis-shaped' cookies while she worked):

And yesterday night, we went to a 'game bar'. One of the game we played is called 'Concept'; you're supposed to make other people guess a word using association of ideas (on the little pictures):

Say you want to make people guess 'apple'; you can place the little markers on the pictures that mean: food + nature + sphere + red (for example).
Anyway - I discovered I'm terrible at describing a thing but am very good at guessing when other people do it; apparently, I have a super weird thinking process xD
Virginie I wrote a comment somewhere to you that my reading slump is over. Can't find it anymore. Just wanted to let you know.

Oh wow, sounds like you have a great time! Both, the concert and the game bar sounds really good... But these cookies? Wow! They look awesome and now I really, really want some cookies!
Yay jazz! Though, I have to admit, I listen to jazz more when I go to a dance vs just going to a concert. I've done that too. Usually for musicians who played for dances. =)Those cookies look great and that game sounds like fun. =D

I almost never listen to jazz so I wasn't really sure what to expect; I was very pleasantly surprised :)
I went to the christmas market yesterday, it was a rather small one but with a liveband an lots of artsy installments, it was really interesting. There was also this, reminding me of the umbrella pictures here:

They looked way better live... They are all white but were illuminated with various changing colours. The colours were a lot brighter and colourful than in the pictures...
