Aren't rectangles actually made of many triangles? Or, they could be broken down as such? Colorado poet, Sandra S. McRae gives us these pieces in the form of prose poems, but step carefully, they are sharp around the edges. They hold up well as windows or movable window panes. They can be shuffled and rearranged to either block or let in the light. Into your house. Into your life. If you are lost.
What exactly is McRae triangulating? Is she a surveyor who sets up her tripod and makes marks on a map? Is she lost, or is she showing us what she is finding, holding it up to the light to see more clearly? She shows us wisdom and beauty when devastation would be the case or the emotion. At a blasting site up at a mountain quarry in "Quarry Song" and even in her poems, "Interview With Anger" and "Phantom Pain" we can see destruction and coincidentally (or is it?) life's tenacious hold on us or that we have on it.
McRae was one of Edward Dorn's favorite students. Why? Read these poems to find out. Here is a hint: they hold ordinary surprises, but at an extraordinary level. Yes, so very extra-ordinary. They are energetic and reveal the humility and sophistication of the poet and her discoveries.
