Q&A with K.A. Tucker

You have written books in a couple of different genres. Is there still a genre you haven't explored but would love to? (if so which one?)

-What was something interesting that you learned writing one/some of your books?
- Which heroine from your books makes you the proudest? You wish people, girls/women would look up to her?
Love your books. Can't wait to read Keep her safe.

Hi Betul! Thank you for reading my books! I'd like to write a fantasy. I have written a dystopian/paranormal/fantasy type series, but I'd like to write high fantasy. I have a story in mind already, but it will take time to write it.

Hi Laura! I'd say that all of my stories are fairly emotional (especially my series.) Burying Water is one of my personal favourites and much of it is set in a small town in Oregon, so that could be a good book. Until It Fades is also set in a small town, with a single mother and waitress. Brett is definitely sweet, and Cath saves his life so it has a storybook romance feel to it. Hope you enjoy whatever you choose!

Hi Pamela, It all depends on what you like and your mood, I guess. The Ten Tiny Breaths series is straight up contemporary romance, Burying Water series has more suspense and is a bit darker, but is still heavily focused on romance. He Will Be My Ruin is a sexy suspense/thrillerish sort of book, Until It Fades is a contemporary, swoony book. I also have a YA paranormal dystopian fantasy series (my first series that I ever wrote, and a lot of fun) if that's your thing.

Hi! I used to write as a small child. I've always loved stories. But I began writing when my second child was 3 months old, as a way to escape without leaving the house. It quickly evolved into a passion and here I am! :D

Hi Sophie! Good question! I've never given co-writing any serious thought because I don't think my writing style would allow for it. But if I were to try it out, I think it'd be with Christina or Lo from Christina Lauren. No preference as to which, because the two of them together write one hell of a good book, and I'd be able to learn from them.

Hi Karlita!
When I'm not writing.... Hmmm... those are rare moments :D I love food (cooking, and eating, but eating more), I love spending time at the cottage with my kids, and binge-watching Netflix shows. My favourite pastime lately has been curling up in bed at night with my younger daughter, each of us reading our own books.

Hi Antonella!
One of my favourite parts of writing is creating different female characters who are all strong in their own way, no matter what their personality, their background, their character flaws, or the mistakes they make in their journey. In that sense, I can't choose one female character for readers to aspire to, because everyone is different, and everyone has their own way of approaching life. I'm proud of them all, and I would say that readers will likely find one female character of mine that they can relate to the most. :D

Hi Jessie! I'm glad you enjoyed TTB so much. I have no plans to write in their world again, but never say never. I'm not a fan of epilogue-type books as I find they don't have enough plot to hold my interest, and I don't want to create drama for the sake of creating drama. That being said, if an idea ever struck me, I'd consider going with it. That was the case for In Her Wake. Readers kept asking me to write TTB from Trent's POV but I wasn't willing to (also not a big fan of retellings) BUT writing a prequel was all new material gave readers something they didn't have before and I was all over that.

Hi Katie! Thank you for reading my books!
In Her Wake was by far the hardest book to write emotionally, and it's only a novella (a long novella at that, but still.) Getting inside Trent's head and trying to do his pain justice--imagining myself in his shoes--was draining.

Hi Michelle!
I'm dying to meet George R.R. Martin. I want to understand how he built his world and what inspired him, and how on earth he keeps track of every plot line. He's a genius!

Hi Jacqueline! It's hard for me to choose one favourite, though my standard go-to is the The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. But I've also read some other fantastic series in the last year (Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series, which I adored, C.S. Pacat's The Captive Prince series, which was unlike anything I'd ever read before. The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simmons still sits firmly in my mind, the way she transports readers into such a devastating part of history on a personal level brilliantly done. As you can see, I'm a big fan of series :D

Hi Debra!
It wasn't so much a decision as a need. I need romance in everything I read. It can be a hint of romance, or a promise of a romance to come, but I need it there to feel satisfied. It's almost like a grounding force for me.

Hey Nicole!
Let's see... George R.R. Martin, Sarah J. Maas, Lauren Oliver, Tarryn Fisher, Ken Follett, C.S. Pacat, Christina Lauren.... to name a few :D

What is your favorite series to binge watch on Netflix?
and....
If you could be the best at anything (other than writing), what would it be? It doesn't have to be a skill you already possess.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us!

Hi Sarah! I never know how any of my stories will end when I sit down to write. Sometimes I don't even know what the next chapter should bring, until I figure out who the characters actually are, because who they are plays into how they will react to what's happening in the plot. BUT, how can I really figure out who they are until I've figured out the plot? A lot of time it feels like a chicken-or-egg situation. That part of writing is painful for me, and causes many rewrites until I get it right, but it's just part of my process. I am testing out a new outline process (it's very loose, a script-writing method) and so far it is proving to be helpful. I'm still rewriting and spinning my tires, but I'm definitely closer to my target when I sit down.

Hi J.!
Gosh, that's a tough question. I'd consider being a Stark (from GRRM's Song of Ice & Fire) but any of them could die on any given day, so I think I'll avoid that.
I think perhaps Tatiana from The Bronze Horseman, not for the romance aspect but for the stark, cold reality of such a horrible, real time in history. I'm a firm believer that experiencing a hard reality resets a part of you and, if you allow it, makes you a better human being.

Hi Emily,
I like to snack... it's my weakness LOL
But when I'm writing, it is a problem, especially around deadline time. I eat ALL THE TIME and none of it is healthy. I'm trying to be better and not run out to the corner store to grab my weaknesses--red licorice and Turtles chocolates.

Hi Shay,
I do! Well, it's a paranormal/dystopian/fantasy romance series, full of vampires and witches and creatures I made up. YA. It's the first series I wrote and it's what made me fall in love with reading. The first is actually free in ebook :D
Anathema

Hi Sarah!
When I was six years old, I used to write princess fairytales. My school's library had a little setup where they'd bind your pages together and make a cover with cardboard and tacky, remnant wallpaper. I loved writing stories back then, but somewhere along the line I just stopped writing. I only picked it up again with the birth of my second child 8 years ago, more as an escape than a goal. It quickly turned into a passion and obsession, and here I am! :D

Hi Whitney!
I love a good under dog story, and I connect most with female protagonists who are strong-willed and sharp-tongued, and make emotion-based mistakes :D

What is your favorite..."
Hi Laura!
Let's see... I think Scandal was the most addictive for me, from Netflix. Outside of Netflix shows, it was definitely Sons of Anarchy.
As far as being the best at something, that's a tough one. I never really strive to be the best at anything, because I don't like competing with anyone but myself, and achieving "best at" status feels like a competition.
I do wish I could act. I'd love to be the female Leonardo DiCaprio (arguably once of the most talented and respected actors out there)

Hello :D
Short answer, no. Not intentionally, anyway. I think a tiny bit of an author leaks into every character they write, in the form of their voice, but in terms of characterization, I'm not nearly that interesting LOL
