If I wouldn't be optimistic I wouldn't touch these initials at all ... the bots are reimporting them quite fast... (or the users or the authors themselves)

I think the extra spaces go after the initials as I think the policy would be the same as as disambiguating with middle initials:
When separating authors with middle initials in their names, please place additional spaces after the middle initial:
Catherine^H.^Anderson
Catherine^H.^^Anderson
Catherine^H.^^^Anderson

And putting the space after the initial would mean between letter and period ( C.P .) as I think the spaces at the end get truncated.
And if you'd go by the new single name policy it would be C.P. . - that's kind of strange either...

No, C.P.^^Lastname is correct and C.^P.^Lastname is not and never will be correct (although exceptions may be made, I suppose, but that is upon author's request). If names have been disambiguated like that, it was done by someone inexperienced.
To go by the example in the manual, I have on occasion seen Catherine^^H.^Anderson, but that is also not correct. The spaces should follow after the initial.

yes I know but in this case it's only C. P. no other lastname :)
And a quick search didn't find a better name :( (bad imports, what a joy)

Sorry, I didn't fully understand the question, just not thinking C.P. was the entire name. Isn't there a new policy about this? Wouldn't it be the same as disambiguating single name authors? (And what was that, putting a "^period" after the name?)

Ahaa!

As there are so many possibilities I'm not yet sure how that can be structured in any way - so, ideas are welcome.
GR rules on initials are quite clear, no space between them and they should have periods.
A lot of initials get imported as e.g. A.^A. or A^A or AA some as A.A or AA. or A^. A or whatever variations you can think of.
They need to get corrected to go to the correct author profile.
Caution:
- some 2 letter names are in fact real names, like Ab or Ak can be legitimate names (or initials)
- some GR authors (but that's rare) are allowed to have names not according to that policy, so check the combine page for a note by staff
- some GR authors do just change their initials to something incorrect without having a note from staff, they need to be corrected by asking via contact form
- in case there are followers on a profile that needs to be merged into a GR author report it to staff via the contact form
I'm using the "add author" function in the forum for that, not tried if the normal search is useful there.
If you use that too you need to merge empty profiles to get more names in the list and be careful with the spaces - had it a few times that there were 2 space behind the last . which brings up no or different results than 1 or no space.
And always press "search" sometimes there is no pop up but a lot of names coming up by hitting the button.
