Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments Hoffman can be a bit hit or miss for me, but I was really excited to read this book when I first heard about it. Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies, and while I only vaguely recall the book, enough to know they are quite different, I jumped at the chance to learn more about the aunts.

I loved reading their trials and tribulations with life and love, though I felt that Jet suffered underdevelopment in comparison to her sister Fanny. The big shocker though was learning of a mysterious brother, Vincent, who is a skilled magic user in his own right.

In all this was a delightful story, and I think it might just necessitate a rereading of Practical Magic, which I don't recall liking nearly as much.

Amy | 12947 comments I especially enjoyed Vincent too. Interesting that this wasn’t one of my favorites or highest rated of hers.

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments This was also 5 stars, though really more like 4.5.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments Alice Hoffman is an author I have always wanted to try. Do you recommend Practical Magic to start? Do you have other favorites?

message 6: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12947 comments Nope! I love her more historical fiction works like DoveKeepers and the Marriage of Opposites. But she writes diversely, and with a range of audiences and style. On instinct I might say why not start with Faithful. She weaves her spirituality through it, and it’s more contemporary with a bit of a YA feel.

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments Amy definitely knows more about Hoffman than me, so I would take her recommendations. That said Practical Magic was my first Hoffman.

Amy | 12947 comments I also loved the third Angel, but damned if I even remember what it was about or why. And of course my review got lost in the move from shelfari. At least I think it did.

Jgrace | 3950 comments You could try The Red Garden which is a book of mildly linked short stories. Mostly historical fiction with a little paranormal atmosphere. If you really dislike her after one story, it's easy to quit. :)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments This book answered a question I didn’t even know I had until I started reading it: how were the aunts related to Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock?!

Seriously, never even questioned it until this book 😂

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments Nicole, you crack me up!

Susie I’ve only read one Hoffman, The Marriage of Opposites, upon Amy’s recommendation. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The audio was excellent.
