Hoffman can be a bit hit or miss for me, but I was really excited to read this book when I first heard about it. Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies, and while I only vaguely recall the book, enough to know they are quite different, I jumped at the chance to learn more about the aunts.
I loved reading their trials and tribulations with life and love, though I felt that Jet suffered underdevelopment in comparison to her sister Fanny. The big shocker though was learning of a mysterious brother, Vincent, who is a skilled magic user in his own right.
In all this was a delightful story, and I think it might just necessitate a rereading of Practical Magic, which I don't recall liking nearly as much.
Nope! I love her more historical fiction works like DoveKeepers and the Marriage of Opposites. But she writes diversely, and with a range of audiences and style. On instinct I might say why not start with Faithful. She weaves her spirituality through it, and it’s more contemporary with a bit of a YA feel.
I also loved the third Angel, but damned if I even remember what it was about or why. And of course my review got lost in the move from shelfari. At least I think it did.
You could try The Red Garden which is a book of mildly linked short stories. Mostly historical fiction with a little paranormal atmosphere. If you really dislike her after one story, it's easy to quit. :)
