I was reading this wondering why so many people were raving about it, and then, bam, the narrative took a turn. It ended up being a 4 star read for me once the story really gets going.
I liked this book a lot, and can't wait to see the eventual movie, which will no doubt contain animated segments.

Agreed that this book really transformed from its mediocre beginnings - I was rolling my eyes a few pages in, irritated to have gotten stuck with yet another "New York Story" about some naive college girl from the boondocks losing her innocence and coming of age in the city. After the time skip I got a bit more engaged and then when the situation really set up I was fully invested - I'm so glad I gave it a proper chance to surprise me!
