I'm glad you had that as the yearly read for 2018 because wow, that's one of the best books I've ever read. What a story! Of course, it's a classic, translated from French, and so the style is different, so it might not be everyone's cuppa. Later I watched one of the movies, and it sucked. But then, the plot is very complicated and the book is loooooong, so a movie wasn't going to do it much justice anyway. If interested, my review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...
I wonder if maybe I would have gotten into it better if I hadn’t tried to do most of the reading during middle of the night nursing sessions when I was quite tired... I’ve found that I can’t read the Red Sparrow books near bedtime when I’m tired or I don’t comprehend a lot. It goes much easier when I read on morning walks with my daughter. Perhaps I’ll try this one again someday since I really enjoyed the movie I saw years ago.

Some books require more concentration than others, and older classics usually have more eloquent (?) writing styles that maybe our modern fast-track brains have to adjust to!

Great job, you dedicated and good-looking Book Snail!
Even if you attempted the book but decided it wasn't for you, congratulations on tackling a big ol' classic -- and hopefully not dropping it on your little snail foot! (yes, snails do have a foot, singular).
No rush (that ain't our style), but we're now taking SUGGESTIONS for a 2019 Yearly Book Read at:
