I stopped by yesterday while they were still setting up and brought them some donuts as a treat for their hard work. Will be back there today ... probably right after they open!

Koren (koren56) | 210 comments For those following my posts about our flooded library:

The library reopened today so I stopped by. As it turns out, everything was not ruined. The books that were ruined are being replaced 100% by the insurance company. There is a lot of work to do to get everything back in order but at least we are able to use it again.

On a bright note: Our main branch has an adult reading challenge going right now. All you have to do is read one book each month that fits the challenge and turn in your slip to be entered into a drawing. At the end of the year a grand prize winner will be selected from everyone that completed all 12 months. I won the March drawing!! A $20 gift certificate for Barnes and Noble.

It's interesting and I am tempted to do it, but I don't think I knit fast enough to knit along with music.

L J | 245 comments The description of this group fits me!
Also, since I spend hours and hours volunteering with Friends group at local library this seemed a natural group to join. I am always interested in what other libraries and Friends groups are doing and like to share what we do. Of course all this is often done while listening to book.

I have read a couple of Alison Bechdel graphic novels and enjoyed them. Well, the Merriam-Webster is adding the term bechdel test into its newest dictionary.

Elyse (sjpeachy) Hello - I just joined this group this evening. It seems a good fit. I love libraries. My local library is a VERY busy one. I've been a member of my local Friends of the Library for years. I was Recording Secretary for a few years but now reassigned to be the treasurer. Argh. Numbers are not something I excel at. Oh well, I can balance my own checkbook so we'll see what happens. Wish me luck!

Welcome fellow Friend. Look forward to seeing you in discussions.
Years ago when I was active in Friends I was on board and an officer. Now that I'm active again and on the board I say if they want me to be officer someone else can take over taking care of books for book sale. Most people don't know how much work is done by Friends and how much Friends groups provide for libraries.

Yes, it is a lot of work. Especially the book sales. We're always looking for new members to help. Especially young ones. Books are heavy! But as the new treasurer I got a huge kick out of counting thousands of dollars on the last day of our most recent 2-day sale. We have fun spending it on much needed items for the library(ies) - we have 5 branches. Our biggest "fun" expenditure is to buy 5 sets of passes to local museums. Does anyone else belong to a library that offers museum passes?

We are always looking for new members and like you we seek young ones able to do physical labor. The last two or three years, thanks to a fellow board member, we've had families of volunteers from the local home schooling group.
Library system I'm in offers passes to a number of things including museums.

L J | 245 comments Library is closed 2 days for Christmas and I am appreciating the time off. Been packing books and other Friends stuff for removal before library remodel starts. Major weeding by library overwhelmed us. I was hoping to finish packing yesterday but it didn't happen as more books kept being brought to me. I didn't wrestle any person but did wrestle over 40 boxes on Festivus and I think that should count. Boxing Day it's back to boxing books.
Tonight I plan to enjoy book, music and mocha latte. Tomorrow there's breakfast and pecan gathering.
Hope all enjoy what you have planned.

˜”*°•.˜”*°• Sheri •°*”˜.•°*”˜ | 53 comments It's Christmas Eve for us and thankfully everything is ready.

My library is closed from Tuesday, December 24-Thursday, December 26 and then again on January 1st. Closes at 5 on News Years Eve.

Another year gone by. And I would like to thank everyone here for sticking with this group. Right now I have a HUGE fine with the library to pay off before I can check anything else out.

Hope no one else has been naughty like me! Even if you have, you are still good people.

Our library no longer has fines. They decided that when people had big fines they didnt come to the library and the money they got from fines really didnt amount to enough to make up for people not bringing the books back when they have big fines. Maybe your library will see the light! Anyway, Happy New Year to all of you.

Used to be you could still check out e-books but not paper books. I might have to go in and renew my card though. That might be the problem.

Thank you. It's a good group.

"Right now I have a HUGE fine with the library to pay off before I can check anything else out."
You might talk to them about it. If problem is that you owe fines unless it's been sent to collection most libraries have the ability to clear or reduce fines at their discretion. If you owe for lost materials that's a different situation.

"Used to be you could still check out e-books but not paper books. I might have to go in and renew my card though. That might be the problem."
Some of us volunteering at the Friends book sale found out we needed to update our cards. A couple of us jokingly asked if we could just go home instead of working. Turned out cards didn't need renewed. The system was requiring us to confirm or update our contact information. It was some kind of glitch because we'd already done that during update campaign.

"Hope no one else has been naughty like me! Even if you have, you are still good people."
We seldom have fines now because books auto renew and there are no fines on children's books but I did have fine this year. I had books out when renewal malfunctioned and library was closed due to weather. When I went to pay before end of year the person working was surprised I had fine and asked what happened. I didn't mention the library being closed just that I had books out when auto-renewal malfunctioned. Fine was cancelled. Most libraries want you to be able to check out books.
