Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments Mine seems to be open still for borrowing, but events are all closed. I think they are considering it an 'essential service' here as all 'non-essential' services are closed now in most of Australia. I'm a casual teacher, so I believed I was out of a job, but I was contacted today by schools that had booked me in to say for now, I can keep working with them (they desperately wanted to pay me) so at least that's one more day of work! My side job got shut today, with all permanent and casual employees stood down :(

But I'm hoping that the library stays open as I live directly across the road and I don't imagine my job sustaining as a casual much longer, so will like to keep reading. The ebook and audio selection from my library is not fantastic.

Yes, mine closed several weeks ago. I still have books out - fortunately for me they automatically extended everybody's due dates. Also fortunately for me, they have an e-book collection as well.

Same here! I still have one book from them (that I've now finished) and I don't know if/when I'll be allowed to return it. I don't want to drop it in the book drop if they don't want us to, but I also don't want it sitting around my house for another month. I'm not so patiently waiting for them to reopen so I can get some new books for April!

Mine did the same thing at first where they cancelled all the events and then later just decided to close their doors for now. I live in a pretty small town so I hope that they aren't affected too much by everything. I work in food service right now so we are still open for the time being (just pick-up and delivery), but business is super slow obviously and people are gradually getting cut from the schedule. I really hope that we can all get back to normal soon!!

~Bellegirl91~ (bellegirl91) Anyone have a different book goal besides a possible how many books you want to read? One of mine is to actually FOCUS on majority books of series I still need yet to finish that I started whether last year or two years ago haha. Only very few highly anticipated release books this year that are exceptions. But also to read other books on my TBR and not stress myself about keeping up with some few popular anticipated books and just read my pace and what I want to focus on this year :) so basically turning it into a 'catch up year' lol

I have a couple more specific goals for myself this year! One is that I want to read Dune before the new movie comes out in December (Timothée Chalamet is playing the main character 😍) And another *sort of* goal of mine is to read some classics that are on my personal list of "books to read in my lifetime". I hope you get to accomplish your goals for 2020! You got this!!!

AurorainBookland | 404 comments My goal besides reading a 100 books this tyear is to finish the series I started last year or a few years ago that I wanted to finish reading but with the library closed it might not happen but heath and safety come first.
Im not interested in owning the books in the series I only buy books if I know ill re read it over and over or I really want to read a book and the library doesnt have it

message 258: by Kate (new)

Kate My goal this year is to wrap up a bunch of series I'm part way through and to knock out some chunky books I have on my shelves. I think I have not knocked any of those out and I've probably only started new series.... whoops

I have several (make that lots) of favorite authors and most of them have written books in a genre that they aren't really known for. A good example is Arthur Conan Doyle. Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes and his mysteries, but Doyle also wrote sci-fi & non-fiction. For those authors, I'd like to read the books in those "other" genres.

Yes, my 2020 goal is to read more books by women authors and to read more of Asian literature, particularly my native Indian literature.
Also, I've decided not to buy books this year, and read from my already hoarded books or borrow from the library.

message 261: by Sunny (new)

Sunny | 2311 comments As a reader I have always been drawn toward series. I enjoy spending time with characters I've taken a liking to and am happy when I have books that feature them. And, as usual, I have several on my reading list for this year.

Over the last three months, however, I have discovered the satisfaction in reading trilogies. There's just something cozy about three books that are closely related and/or have developed a single theme. It's also comforting to know that there's only three and it doesn't go on for ages.

In January I read Neil Simon's Eugene plays: Brighton Beach, Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound. I enjoy plays because they're to the point and are not over-long.

In February I read:
Speak No Evil (No Evil Trilogy, #1) by Allison Brennan Well written with interesting complex characters. Reminded me a bit of Lisa Gardner.

See No Evil (No Evil Trilogy, #2) by Allison Brennan I liked it more than I did the 1st book.

Fear No Evil (No Evil Trilogy, #3) by Allison Brennan Was my favorite of the three.

And this month I read a fantastic young adult trilogy set in 2051 with an apocalyptic view:

Pulse (Pulse, #1) by Patrick Carman Tremor (Pulse, #2) by Patrick Carman and Quake (Pulse, #3) by Patrick Carman

Oh yeah, all three of my local libraries are shut down. Fortunately, this actually takes away any excuses I had about not reading my own books, especially since my local thrift book stores are closed too. I have no choice BUT to read all my owned but unread books. Maybe I'll even clear a whole shelf off!

I have come to discover I do not care for series or trilogies. Regardless of how much I may love the characters, the setting, and the world, I get tired of them all pretty quickly. There have been times when I found a book of great interest that I immediately put back as soon as I discovered that it was part so-and-so of some series. The idea of getting emotionally invested in one world for too long exhausts me. Lol.

With that said, I am also a hypocrite because I turn around and read series and trilogies all the time without hesitation. I think the difference is I have to be in the right mood to invest in a unfamiliar author. Brandon Sanderson starts a new series? I'll snatch that up like a thief with gold. But when I'm browsing for new reads among unfamiliar authors, I need to start with a stand alone, or a series that can be read like a standalone, or be tricked into thinking it is a standalone and I only discover upon finishing it that it's from a series but by then, I am too much invested to quit.

Our local library closed, but if a person puts books on hold they will put them in a bag and schedual a time for you to pick them up. It might be worth calling and seeing if they are doing anything like that. I have checked out quite a few craft books and the second half of the Harry Potter series!

Here the libraries are closed down as well, have been for a while. Which means I couldn't do the buddy read this month that I planned to do, since that would be a book I would have borrowed from the library..

Here they do have audiobooks, but I found out this is not really my thing after all. So I'm rereading books that I have and reading the stack of ebooks I still haven't read on my ereader. Also, they have a program in the local library where you can give a genre and they'll come with a little bag with books in it that fit that genre. With a maximum up to 7 books. But they won't return books, so you'll have to keep those books till the libraries open again and you don't know what books you'll get when you apply for this program.

Jordan Hi everyone!

I just read up on something called a postal book club and I would love to try starting one. Is there anyone in this group who would be interestd. The thought is that you pick a book and get a notebook and write your views on the book and why you chose it then you mail both the book and the notebook to the next member in the group. Idealy you have 6 members and each member is given 2 months to read, take notes, and send the book onward. Every person is doing a separate books so there are 6 books circulating. If you are interested please let me know!!! If you need clarification please see the links below!

message 287: by AurorainBookland (new)

AurorainBookland | 404 comments Libraries have limited sevices and hours and you cant go in building curbside pick up for holds. Havent used it working on reading the physical copies but I am supporting the library using the ebook app. Libby which is updated regularly.

I dont mind have a ton of books in the to read shelf of goodreads aka a long list of to reads, having a long list helps me have books to read as if one doesnt work out and gets deleted from the shelf and I can usually find a few things I want to read from that list.

But if you want to keep it smaller maybe make a sub catagory like make a shelf on goodreads and select a certain number of books to keep there and use that list to go off of and once you read all those then add more from the main goodreads to read shelf?

Hi Izzy! I recently moved to pursue a master’s degree so my new library is way nicer than the one where I lived before. (2 floors and they have lots of non-book items you can borrow too e.g. video games, gardening tools, musical instruments, etc.) 🤩 They are open by appointment only, so every hour they have a limit for how many people can come inside the building and then in between these sessions they clean/sanitize everything. I believe they’re also holding returned items in quarantine for a certain amount of time and they’re offering contactless curbside pickup. However, since I’m in the thick of my textbooks and also balancing 2 jobs, I haven’t gotten to use the library as much as I would like to. I hope you’re doing great and staying healthy most importantly!!

Hi Hufflepuffprincess, you can contact Goodreads Librarians (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...) to have it fixed.

My suggestion: a hermitage :D
But also, why would you ever want to do that? Imagine, not being enticed by new books ever again!
Or "having to" read the same 10 or /*insert number of owned books here* because there aren't other options. I mean, the boredom, seriously!

Mitzi (mimalatana) Hi! I truly apologize for not being active within the group. I will try to find time to be partly active. Anyways, I'm trying to challenge myself and read classics and have an understanding on analyzing the characters and the plots. So, my question is can you guys give me a recommendations on good classics?
