Lou (view spoiler)[ It's kind of unusual for us to know right off the bat who the killer of a story is. I wonder if that's more how it was when this was first published in 1952. But he seems like a total wacko! He's leading Amy on and I think he's going to kill her to get of her nagging. And poor Joyce is already doomed for being a prostitute, right? I think that's the main reason he's killing her. He's definitely out for revenge for his brother's murder. (hide spoiler)]

I like the (view spoiler)[small town feel, a sheriff (awful as he may be), country roads it seems and all those things. Brings back some good memories for me. (hide spoiler)]

Lou (view spoiler)[is one crazy hella of an evil guy! I couldn't believe how viciously he beat Joyce up and she was completely innocent! Then he kills Elmer and that was almost more merciful than how he killed Joyce. (hide spoiler)]

Amy (view spoiler)[was kind of irritating and I wanted to almost kill her. LOL But again, Lou just doesn't seem to have any remorse about anything he does and he supposedly cared about her to some degree but the way the author described how he punched her in the gut made my skin crawl. (hide spoiler)]

Johnny (view spoiler)[ poor kid. I think they were onto Lou pretty darn quick but they are sure having a hard time getting the right evidence. (hide spoiler)]

But I can't imagine how tough it must be to be around criminals all day long - as a sheriff - and also have his brother killed and knowing it was dirty AND THEN to have his father pass after the loss of his brother. I can't imagine holding it all together after that either....

but he sounds like he has always been bad. I mean, when he was younger, he hurt a girl around 3 right?? THAT's AWFUL! He is an awful person (hide spoiler)]

I was completely(view spoiler)[ surprised Joyce was still alive. I mean, it makes sense but I just completely bought that she was dead.....

Yep! UGH!!! The boy he killed I thought was one of the worst just because he was so trusting. And to answer your question, I thought (view spoiler)[he killed both of them. I don't remember him stabbing himself but I finished it 12 days ago and I'm lucky if I remember yesterday...literally. (hide spoiler)]

I was really sucked into this one. It might not be an amazing book in the terms of literary writing BUT it had me. I've said many times if a book can get me emotionally AND it's not full of errors, I'm likely to give it a 5 and I loved this one. Sorry you didn't like it more.

Awe, I did like it!!
I think I would have liked it much more if I'd had more time to really dive in to it. I just had so many days between reading it that I was getting confused on which police guy was which and who was who's father! lol It was good though! I can't wait to see what my "blind date with the a book" is this month!! :D

I always get excited to see who my partners are but the last couple months didn’t go too well. But it’s still fun. I hate when I get a best book buddy but they don’t follow through. I’m sure I’ve done that but I try really hard to follow through on things like that.
