See You In September really gave me a rugged, remote North Island experience in New Zealand.

Claire (clairemcalpine) | 313 comments I've been in an unrecognisable Australia with three immigrant women, from Africa, Asia and Europe. Brilliantly conceived novella that won the Oe Kenzaburo Prize.

Farewell, My Orange definitely worth persevering past the first 50 pages.

Shomeret | 520 comments I've finally returned from my trip to Japan. I've been there for months, and it was an unexpected pleasure. Julie Kagawa took me there with Shadow of The Fox and I encountered some unusual characters.

Shomeret | 520 comments Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide was totally amazing. It's beautiful. Mexico came alive for me.

Shomeret | 520 comments I was in World War II Paris for most of the book and late 20th- 21st century New York for the prologue and epilogue. I went there with the World War II art thriller The Storm over Paris which is a first novel by William Ian Grubman.

I found it suspenseful and I really liked the art aspect.

Was in Sweden with Beartown. I enjoyed it - it's about so much more than hockey - 4 stars.

Also, did a re-read of The Air You Breathe set in Brazil and a bit in the U.S. It's one of my favorite books of the year - 5 stars.

Was in the U.S. with A Place for Us - was just okay - 3 stars.

Nadine in California (nadinekc) 18th century Berne, Paris, and London with Little. Five stars! My review

I was in Germany with Go, Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck. An intense sense of place, certainly. It’s not Visitation, for me, but still a strong 4* read and one I recommend.

Shomeret | 520 comments I was in 19th century England with Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage in The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage a graphic alternate history.

Shomeret | 520 comments I have returned from ancient Rome, alternate 21st century Rome and the fictional country of Roma Nova with Roma Nova Extra by Alison Morton. This is an anthology of short stories which deal with a matriarchal Roman colony that was established in ancient times in Morton's alternate continuity.

I was particularly glad to see short stories about the origins of Roma Nova and how it became matriarchal.

All over the world with The Seven Culinary Wonders of the World: A History of Honey, Salt, Chile, Pork, Rice, Cacao, and Tomato (well done, interesting with a combo of history and recipes - 5 stars) and in Biblical times with The Red Tent (well suited to audio - nicely done - 4 stars).

Shomeret | 520 comments I've been in 19th century Sweden with In the Month of the Midnight Sun by Cecilia Ekbäck. This is a historical Scandinavian noir mystery. I found it rather depressing.

Shomeret | 520 comments I have returned from 1491 Spain and a legendary island that isn't on any maps in The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson.

There were things that I loved about the book, but I was ambivalent about the end. See my review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I just finished listening to The Dry and really enjoyed it - was in the mood for a good mystery. Loved the listening to the Aussie accent narrated by Steven Shanahan. I think it was someone here who led me to it - Andrea, Carol??? Thanks!

I enjoyed The Red Tent - the audio was good. The Seven Culinary Wonders of the World: A History of Honey, Salt, Chile, Pork, Rice, Cacao, and Tomato was really interesting - I think you'd enjoy it - it's a combination of history, how each of the culinary wonders were adapted culturally around the world, process of bringing the culinary wonders to market, and recipes - very well done.

Glad you liked it. I still haven't read the #2, but am actually about to read her newest, a standalone, for one of my GR challenges. It's getting rave reviews. The Lost Man

Okay The Lost Man is on my TBR list now! It's scheduled to be published in 2019 here in the U.S. In the meantime, lined up for Force of Nature.

Nadine in California (nadinekc) I was in Ancient Greece with The Silence of the Girls, which I liked from the beginning, but it grew on me more and more as I read, and now as I look back on it. I may have to change my star rating to five. My review.

I spent Christmas in Morocco with The Moroccan Girl. It took me to Casablanca, Marrakech and Rabat. It's been a long, long time since I was actually there in person, but the Marrakech section of the story, in particular, really took me back there.
