Q&A with Penelope Douglas
Alex wrote: "Hi Penelope! If you had to write a present time/contemporary Disney Princess retelling who would you chose and why? :)Best wishes, and many amazing new ideas in the New Year!"
Mulan. She's a strong heroine, and Shang was dreamy. It wasn't love and first sight, and I enjoy the angst of her hiding right under his nose. Banks from Hideaway was loosely based on Mulan. Dressing like a man, trying to prove herself...
Thanks for the question!
Court wrote: "I love all your characters. If you had to choose one to hang out with for the day, who would it be?"Hey, Court!
I would hang out with Manny, I think. He needs lots of love.

Story wrote: "Which, if any, of your characters do you most identify with? Did you write your own personality into true character? Do you get inspiration from characters from people you know or meet? Do you drea..."Hey!
I most identify with the flawed heroines, like Ryen and K.C./Juliet, and yes, I write my personality--pieces of it, anyway--into all my characters. Things they like, shows they watch, etc.
I get inspiration from everything really, and I've definitely taken pieces from people I know and molded them into characters, but I don't think I've completely written a single person. Just whatever strikes me about them.
And no, while I plot out stories, I don't dream up everyone's backstory before I write. If I wrote a different genre I would, but it's nice to be surprised by some things as I write.
Thank you!!
Nightmarish-Moon wrote: "Hi Penelope! I've got one question that I've been asking myself since I read Punk 57 (and I guess Misha can answer too ^^) : What does "57" stands for ? (I've always thought that it was the number..."
Hi, there!
Yes, it's in relation to the song he wrote. All the 57 things he mentioned.
Thanks for the question!
Carolina wrote: "Are you interesting in writing trilogies this new 2018 or just keep writing series? I'm super curious to know."Hi, Carolina!
I don't have any trilogies in my head waiting to be written. Sorry! Just some stand alones and my series.
Thanks for the question!
Jessie wrote: "Which couple was your favorite to write about?"Hi, Jessie!
Misha and Ryen. Both very strong, flippant people, and they were so fun.
xoxo
Hi penelope! Lots of questions lol So idk if they can answer, but, David and Lev: what were u thinkking when Gabriel order u to hurt Banks (Hideaway's scene)?
What are your thoughts and feelings toward Banks?
To Kai: It was a coincidence, you finding Banks in that grave or you followed her (on that devils night 6 six years ago)?
Also, what do you love the most about Banks? :b
Sophie wrote: "Hello Penelope! I'm curious what inspired you of the events that took place with the Horseman. Also, about the pen pals in Punk57, did you also have a pen pal? :)"Hi, Sophie!
Corrupt was inspired by a news story I heard about a young woman who spoke out against some young men and they went to prison (rightly so) for their crime. I just wondered how it would be in a couple years when the men got out of jail and if they ran into her again. What that dynamic would be like.
The rest...Devil's Night and the revenge was all just a product of a lot of daydreaming, time, and Pinterest. lol
And yes, I had a penpal, a girl, in the 5th grade. That's where I got the idea for Punk 57.
Thank you for the questions!
bookbruin wrote: "What are your favorite types of books to read? Any recent favorites?"I rarely read in my genre anymore, but I recently read The Kiss Quotient, due out next June, and I adored it. I also love YA fantasy/dystopian and mystery/suspense. I read when I can but not as often as I like! But I loved The Night Circus, The Woman in Cabin 10, and pretty much anything Chelsea Cain writes.
Happy New Year!
Caitlin wrote: "Would Misha and Ryen have still met if other events never happened?"Hey, Caitlin!
I like to think yes. I'm sure Misha would eventually have gotten over what happened and reached out to her again or found that he couldn't cope anymore without her and just showed up at her door one night. Life finds a way of bringing us together.
Thanks!!
Hi Pen Happy New years. I have a couple of QuestionsFor Pen:
1. Is Emmy the same age as the guys or closer to the girls?
2.Will we actually get a scene of the guys going to jail or Will beating Emmy's brother up
For Will: 1. if there was one thing you could change about your past what would it be
2. What exactly drew you to Emmy and how long have you known her?
3. Would you say your the kinky type or into the kinky type
Sarah wrote: "Do you always know how your story will end before you start writing them... or do you have a vague idea that forms into a solid ending the more you write?"Hey!
I'd say it's half and half. Sometimes I know before I start and other times I figure it out as I delve in and get to know the characters more. I don't need to know the ending, but I do need the skeleton of the story planned at least before I start writing.
Happy New Year!
Ellen wrote: "Hi Penelope, I love your books and I'm very excited for the next generation of the Fall Away series.Who is your favorite from the next generation kids?"
Hey, Ellen. Thank you!
It's hard to say, because I haven't written their books yet, so I'll get to know them the more I write, but I'm excited about how Kade will evolve, and I'm very excited to get to James' story.
We shall see!!
xoxo
Cassie wrote: "What is your "must-have" (beside music) when your in writing mode?"Hi, Cassie!
Just some quiet and maybe a snack. I find it hard to write in coffee shops or places with noise and distractions, so I often curl up on the couch at home or lock myself in my office.
Thank you for the question!
Mercedes wrote: "Hi Penelope! You've got some pretty awesome book covers, I'm wondering what the process for getting those is like? Do you make suggestions or just let a cover designer run with their ideas?"Hi, Mercedes!
For my indie covers, I'm kind of a control freak, so I will hand some images to a designer and point them in the right direction. We might go through several revisions, and I'll let them have some creative liberty, but I always have a say and final approval. With my traditionally published books, I can have a say, but my publisher has final approval.

Marisela wrote: "Hi Penelope! I just love your work. What was your favorite thing to write about Erika??"Hi, Marisela!
I loved Erika's dynamic with the guys. Just every interaction and the push and pull. So many favorite scenes in that book.
Thanks for the question!
Christa wrote: "Who is your favorite out of Jarrod, Madoc, and Jax?"Jax! So passionate but friendly, too.
Thank you!
Nicole wrote: "Happy New Years! What are you working on now?"
Hey, Nicole!
Kill Switch and about 2 other novels. I do expect Kill Switch this year, but I'm not sure it will be my next release. I will let everyone know when I have my next release date.
Thanks for the question!
Putri wrote: "do u have an all time fav book & author? i would love to know! and i love you and your bookkksssss pls keep writing queen i will support you!"Hey!
My favorite book is Frankenstein, but The Night Circus is a close runner up. I don't follow authors, really, so it's the synopsis that has to grab me to make me read a book.
xoxo!!
Z ~ The Diary of Book Enthusiasts wrote: "Which book was the hardest to write? The character who gave you the most trouble?"Hi!
The hardest to write was Corrupt. The plotting took a lot of energy and stress. And I connect to tortured characters more, so the hardest are the more emotionally stable. Lol. Like Madoc and Kai.
Thank you!!
Valentina wrote: "Hi Penelope :) Who is your favorite from the Horseman?"Damon, of course! Love the unstable heroes.
xoxo!
Brittany wrote: "Does music play a role in your writing process? Do you create playlists for each book you write?"Hi, Brittany!
Yes, music is huge for me. All my books have playlists, and I have to have background noise when I write. I listen to music all the time, and lyrics will help inspire a scene often.
Thank you for the question!
Stephanie wrote: "I loved Misconduct. Are you planning to write any more books in that world?"Hey!
Christian, Tyler's son, will be crossing over into the Fall Away spin-off series. So we'll catch up with Easton and Tyler, too!
Happy New Year!
Beba wrote: "Looking at the future, what do you hope to write one day?"Hey, Beba!
I've started to slowly write a sci-fi YA here and there. It will take years to finish, but I have a Pinterest board open for it that readers can browse. It's called Cathedral right now, but the title will probably change. I definitely find myself wanting to branch out and try new things, so hopefully I have a skill for it!
Thank you for the question!
Whitney wrote: "Which character was your favorite to write about?"Hey!
The most tortured ones like Jax, Misha, Jared, and Damon. I like writing the instability and chaos they fell. I also loved Ryen. She was the most real heroine to me.
xoxo!!
bookish_affair wrote: "Hey Penelope!Misconduct was my first taboo (parent/teacher) romance ♡ so do you plan on giving a little glimpse of the Marek Family, like Would we get a teaser of their life after the grand reunio..."
Yep! Christian will be crossing over into the Fall Away series when I start writing that spin-off. We'll see Easton and Tyler again.
Happy New Year!
Hi Penelope,I got your very first book, Bully, when it was free and read it in July 2013. You immediately became one of my favorite authors. What made you decide to write it and how much time did it take when you were a full time teacher?
Penelope, seeing as Wills Grandfather is a past Governor/Mayor , is there any chance that there will be a Devils Night/Fall Away run in,seeing as Madoc is now the mayor/governor,during any of the books? Or possibly Devils Night/Misconduct? I know about the Fall Away/Misconduct crossover and am so excited for it, can’t wait for Christian!!!!
Dawn wrote: "How do you pick which signing events to attend?"Hi, Dawn!
I try to pick signings I haven't been to. Unless they're in my town, then that's easy enough to make happen. And I rarely do international signings, simply because the expense and time away from my family can be difficult. I normally only do a few signings a year.
Thanks for the question!
Chloe wrote: "Hi Penelope,Will we ever get more Easton and Tyler??? I absolutely LOVED them in Misconduct. :) xx"
Thank you! You will catch a glimpse of them in the Fall Away spin-off series. Christian will be crossing over.
Happy New Year!

I don't think Fall Away and Devil's Night will be crossing paths. It's two very different series. But yes, Misconduct and Fall Away will cross.
Thank you for the question!

Hi, Kelly!
I read Fallen Crest High, and I really wanted to read more books like it. And there just weren't a lot. But it got my imagination going, and after months of daydreaming, I had the idea for Bully crystallized, and I decided to start to write it. It took my about a year, and many, many rewrites. But I loved doing it. It felt like I was growing again.

Hey!
1. Is Emmy the same age as the guys or closer to the girls?
A year younger than Will.
2.Will we actually get a scene of the guys going to jail or Will beating Emmy's brother up?
I'm not sure. I haven't outlined Will's book yet. And I don't feel too inclined to show a prison scene, but it could happen if I think it's important for the story. I just don't want to spend too much time on scenes where the main couple isn't present, and in prison, women wouldn't be there, so...there may be a brief flashback but I doubt anything major.
For Will: 1. if there was one thing you could change about your past what would it be?
Well, I'd stop recording our pranks, that's for sure!
2. What exactly drew you to Emmy and how long have you known her?
Emmy Who?
3. Would you say your the kinky type or into the kinky type?
Let's just say I'm easy to please and will try anything once. Almost anything. Ok, anything.
Thanks for the questions!
"So idk if they can answer, but, David and Lev: what were u thinkking when Gabriel order u to hurt Banks (Hideaway's scene)? What are your thoughts and feelings toward Banks?
To Kai: It was a coincidence, you finding Banks in that grave or you followed her (on that devils night 6 six years ago)?

Lev and David: We will always stand by her. And protecting her was instinct. We'd always done it, and her brother would've done the same thing if he was there. I guess over time we all just became family. Banks is our girl. There's no way we could've let anything happen to her, and even if we could, her brother would've killed us. Either way, we're dead.
Kai: I saw her walking away from me up the hill and followed. And what do I love about her? At first, I loved that we talked. How I told her everything without knowing it, and then it was too late to turn back, so then I just went with it and could be honest. I'd felt more like myself with her than any woman. And now, it's still that, but also, I love that I make her feel safe and can be somewhere she can belong and how she loves life and is excited about what's to come. It fills my lungs again. I can't want to see her see the world, go to school, decorate our house, play with our dogs, maybe hold our first kid someday...
Thanks for the questions!
Hi Pen,Any plans for writing some standalones in the future? If so, do you know what they’ll be about? Thank you!!
Hey Pen, I was wondering if you see Damon ever getting back in with the guys (Will,Michael,Kai) properly or them just being cordial with eachother? To Rika: We’ve seen you get frisky with Banks and Alex, do you think that, like Alex, you are bi-sexual? Or just curious? Or, like Madoc would say, is everyone a little bi?
Hi Pen,I have a question for Damon, Do you miss the friendship you had with Will?
and what are you planning to do to Winter? Should we worry for her? *bites nails*
J. wrote: "if you could be any book character for a day, who would you choose and why?"I would be Celia in The Night Circus! Just a day to live in that world would be amazing.
xoxo!
Kelly F 📚 wrote: "Hi Pen,Any plans for writing some standalones in the future? If so, do you know what they’ll be about? Thank you!!"
Yes, I've outlined 3, but I'm not ready to publicize them yet, and I don't know when I'll be done with them.
I'm excited, though!!
Michelle wrote: "If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would you want to meet?"Probably George Carlin. I would make him president if I could. lol
Thanks for the question!
Manuela wrote: "Damon how much would you say Winter's betrayal hurt you?"It didn't. It pissed me off.

Hey!
I definitely think they'll see each other again. Where it goes from there, we'll see!
Rika: Maybe. I definitely like Michael's eyes on me, and it wasn't unenjoyable.
Thanks for the questions!
Maria wrote: "Hi Pen,I have a question for Damon, Do you miss the friendship you had with Will?

Damon: Nothing has changed between Will and me. I could have him back in a second if I wanted. And as for Winter, yeah, I would say she should be afraid right now. Her life is about to be very different.
