What book did you get from the library, bookstore or online ? - 2018

I like mystery and cop/law shows, too, but am usually disappointed by what's been offered thus far. Part of the disappointment when a book character is given an actor's looks & voice, they tend to disappoint because it's impossible to match the person i had in my mind.

One show which didn't work out that way was Jeff Lindsay's series about Dexter Morgan, which began with Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Michael Hall played him better than my mind's version.

I get disappointed as well when a character in a show isn’t what I had envisioned them to be when reading :)

I really liked the Mortal Instrument books by Cassandra Clare but when the show came out, some of the actors they casted were not how I pictured them to be :(

Of course i hasten to add that i feel the same way with movies when their interpretation of a character isn't what i had, but at least that is a shorter experience.

I was online checking about my wait for a book when another title caught my eye. If You've Got It, Haunt It caught my eye because it's a mystery about a woman who owns a vintage clothing shop in a small Southern US town and the ghost which is calling upon her to solve her own murder. Author Rose Pressey apparently has written a number of series but i've not heard of her previously. The fact that they appear to dabble in the paranormal may explain why i haven't seen them but this combo aroused my curiosity. I'm several chapters into it and see my lack in knowledge of fashion history only harms the envisioning of clothing described. The mystery thus far isn't great but it's a short book and i want to see where it goes.

As an aside, on some thread here we mentioned recipes and household tips included in mysteries. This one has two threads of tips, one about purchasing vintage clothing and the other about handling ghosts. LOL! Each chapter begins with a helpful tip about one or the other. :-)

Finished the mystery and it was pretty bad, i must say. Up side, i learned what cigarette pants and spectator shoes are, so not a total loss. :~) I just don't feel the charm of ghosts in mysteries, i suppose.

Nearly finished with my current library book The Dead Yard: Tales of Modern Jamaica. Excellent hybrid of history and travel narrative, that covers almost every segment of Jamaican society and culture one could imagine; the author even gets as close as he can to the unfortunate criminal situation. I suppose ironically, the section that interested me least was the one that might interest many readers more: music.

This was a title that I ran across on the library bookshelf while looking for another book located nearby; I ended up getting this one instead. The author also has a similar book on his experiences in Haiti, which I had read and enjoyed, but didn't realize that he was the author of the Haiti book until after I had checked out this one.

John, are you planning to travel to one of these islands? I like reading about places, whether I intend to visit or not. It's a good education.

No plans to visit the Caribbean anytime soon. Travel writing is my absolute favorite genre.

I've read a few Best of (year) essays. I've enjoyed them. But some years are better than others.
