Darby | 217 comments Just wanted to know how many people did crafty stuff!
I knit. I've knitted for 6 years now (I started when I was 10 so do the math :p) and am currently working on a pretty massive project. I do socks, leg warmers, scarves, arm warmers, Tribbles, and am currently working on a big blanket. I recently learned how to Entrelac so I'm doing a huge blanket, inspired by the Night Circus. I'm posting regular pics on my Instagram (@TheTARDISisBlue).
So I want to know:
What crafts do y'all do? (I'm southern, I'm allowed to say y'all)
And Do you share pics anywhere else so we can all admire them?
You may also brag about achievements too :3

Jasmine Smith (jasmine_24601) At the moment I am doing my art GCSE! But my grandmother and great aunt taught me to knit and sew when i was 6 years old and every year when I am staying with them we have a day dedicated to a single project! I also get lovely food when this happens!!!!!! At the moment though, I am obsessed with making origami dragons! I have made 86 in the last 3 days

message 3: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Jasmine: origami tip: if you run out of actual origami paper, magazine paper is an excellent substitute. And my grandma was the one who taught me to knit too! She didn't remember much, because she's more of a crochet lady but I knew enough to get by. If it weren't for my mom giving me an iPad (and therefore unlimited access to patterns) I'd probably still just be making scarves.

message 4: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashiew) Hey :) I knit but I have only learned to knit a year or so ago so I am not that good. I mainly just make scarfs and I am trying to knit a blanket. I love to draw and paint. I love doing cartoony stuff but I can also do realistic stuff too. Though I can't draw people cartoony or realistic so I tend to avoid that area. I have been dabbling more in creative writing recently since I have more confidence in writing now. Really when it comes to me I am up to trying anything creative. I remember when I was in the Spanish club at my school we had to make pinatas and that was so fun! I remember I made a strawberry one and filled it with strawberry flavored candy. I kind of want to make more but I don't have anywhere to put them haha. (And Darby I use ya'll too and I am southern haha :D ) And I currently don't have any way of sharing pictures of stuff but in a couple of days I can post pics on my goodreads thingy if ya'll would want to see some stuff. Hope you guys have a lovely day :) <3

message 5: by Ailish (new)

Ailish I've been able to knit forever!! When I was little I was fascinated by it so I asked my mum and nanna to teach me.

I've also had the ability to sew (not very well however) forever because my mum was a seamstress, she made her own wedding dress!!

A year ago my nannas sister taught me how to crochet.

I don't do knitting/crocheting/sewing a lot now but I'll pick it up again after my holiday next week (2 weeks in Italy!!).

Speaking of holiday, I want to try to make a scrapbook after my holiday, I've never done it before so I want to give it a go!!

I do a lot of photography, I did want to be a photographer but I don't like deadlines or briefs!! I like to do my own thing, my grandad recently gave me a film camera to experiment with (an om-2 If anyone's interested). I love not knowing what they look like until I've taken them to boots, it's really nostalgic, reminds me of having a disposable camera when I was little! I'd love to have a darkroom, I lived in the school one during gcse photography!!

message 6: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Darby what's entrelack??

message 7: by Ailish (new)

Ailish *entrelac?? It sounds interesting (the blanket looks good!!)

message 8: by Bex (new)

Bex | 27 comments I can knit and sew and I've been doing that for about 8 years (when I was in 2nd grade). I can knit scarves, blankets, and beanies. I can also play the clarinet and ukulele but I'm not sure if that counts as creative

message 9: by Bex (new)

Bex | 27 comments Ooh, and I can also play the piano and bake

message 10: by Catalina (new)

Catalina | 152 comments First of all: wow, you guys are so creative! I want to do so many things after reading what everyone posted on this thread :D

I don't think I have one specific hobby. I go through different 'phases' (if that makes any sense), which is fun because I try different things, but on the other hand I never get to be particularly good at something. So far, I've tried origami, creative writing, painting, baking, playing the piano, even balloon twisting... And I really got into making thread bracelets a few summers ago.
Regarding knitting, I only know the basic stitch. I learned it at school when I was 12. We were doing this project where we knitted little squares that we would then attach in order to create patchwork blankets that we then donated. I was so into it! I might go back to knitting someday :)

At the moment I'm having lots of fun doing pencil sketches and drawings. I'm trying to get better at drawing faces :) I'd share pictures but I'm not very confident about them haha

Darby: I just looked at your pictures on Instagram and your blanket is looking SO cool! I love it!

Ailish: I was thinking of making a scrapbook as well! My mum and I were planning to go buy all the supplies tomorrow, actually :D

Also, I don't know if any of you watch KickThePj on Youtube but I thought this video was appropriate for this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aHAtE... :)

I am the same. I go through these "phases" where all I do is like draw for a week and then I will knit for maybe two weeks or something and then I may do something like make little clay figurines for a while. That is why I am not really good at one particular thing but it is fun.

message 12: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Catalina: cool!! Are you going to scrapbook anything in particular?? Tell me how it goes and what you used!! I've never done a scrapbook before, I've looked on YouTube but I'm still not completely sure, I'm just gunna go with it and not worry too much! Xx :)

message 13: by Zahro (new)

Zahro I started knitting earlier this year and I write some stuff.
I used to origami a lot but now I the only thing I can remember making is a star box so I have a ridiculous amount lying around. XD
Tyring to get into painting? Can do a bunch of beading.
(Ooh so interesting, Zahro.)
Everyone here's so creative :')

message 14: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashiew) Lol the only origami thing I can make is one of those fortune teller things where you write the numbers and the fortunes on it. And I could try to make a dragon since Carrie showed us how... I may actually try that soon.

message 15: by Zahro (new)

Zahro Haha I remember making them. So many. XD
I wanted to try dragons too but I only watched the video once and remembered up to 'bird base', I think. Must watch again and build a dragon army.

message 16: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashiew) When I learned how to make those things I made so many. I told all of the fortunes to all of the people haha. And lol I didn't remember much from the video either. It is very complex -_- But I will try. And what shall thy do with the dragon army? Train thy dragons for epic battles perhaps?

message 17: by Zahro (new)

Zahro If I make one big enough I can fly away.
Obvious choice there.

message 18: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Ailish: there's a bunch of videos about it. The one I used as a Tutorial is by a YouTube user named PlanetPurl. But basically, you knit one chunk pointing on that direction -> and then after knitting a whole row of chunks you start a new one pointing <- that way. I love it so much

I was planning to make one about my holidays and the places I've visited recently. I've never done a scrapbook either, but I'll see how it goes! Let me know when you start yours and maybe we can share tips that we'll eventually start discovering as we go along :D

Gah same here! I wish I was as creative as he is. *-*

My creative-ness lies in drawing. But my whole childhood was spent doing arts and crafts and such and I've gotten into phases of scrapbooking, origami, and once I knitted a headband. But now its just drawing.

message 27: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Halli: I can't draw to save my life. I've done ONE thing that turned out okey, and it was a picture of my ex (of sorts) I feel cheated because I think that's the only proper drawing I've ever done -_- but my bestie is AMAZING. She paints like crazy and sells some of it

message 28: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashiew) Also any advice on doing a ribbed scarf. Every time I try I mess up. And I also am not sure how to finish off the scarf to make it look neat. I also have trouble weaving in the end. Every time I weave in the end bit into the scarf it either looks messy or ends up unraveling. And is there a specific length for a scarf? I know right now I am making my dad one and I want to make one for my friend. I am just so confused. I can purl and knit stitch though so I got that part down. Also I have trouble reading patterns can someone explain what the abbreviations mean?

message 29: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Ashley: Ooh I'm awesome at patterns. But if there are tutorials on YouTube for certain stitches like M1, SSK, SSP, Pick up and Purl. The best tutorials are by Knitwitch, PlanetPurl, and Iknitwithcatfur.

I typically make my scarves bout 4.5 to 5 feet long.

Ahhh thank you so much!!! I will definitely check those tutorials out. And thank you for sharing the lengths you make your scarfs. I don't personally wear scarfs or own any scarfs so I didn't have a reference point or anything to go off of. Thanks. :)

Oh my gosh your scarves are my height. XD
Question: When I'm casting on should I do it in a way that looks similar to the way it does when I cast off? (Should I long-tail cast on?)

message 32: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Darby: thanks!! I'll check out PlanetPurl xx :)

Catalina: yay!! Scrapbook buddies!!!!! xx :D

I'm really looking forward to seeing this dragon army!!

Erica Rucker | 59 comments This is super interesting! We don't find many young people interested in such creative things nowadays :)

I don't really have any specific interests or anything, I just like doing creative things. Mostly for decorations and stuff. I've been making a lot of little table pieces and random decorations for my graduation party. I've also been looking on pinterest for crafts to do to decorate my dorm room for next year. I just want to personalize it as much as possible.

My grandma did a ton of embroidery and quilting so we have quite a bit of unfinished projects of hers that I'd actually love to learn how to finish, especially the embroidery! Not sure why, but I've always found it quite fascinating!

Decorating sounds like so much fun! I have always wanted to decorate a room or a party or something but I haven't really had the chance yet. A fun thing you can do for your dorm room is get a bulletin cork board thing and just customize it a lot. I have a cork board in my room and I got some different decorative scrap book paper and glued it to the cork board to make it look more fun. I am also planning on painting the border and gluing some decorative things to the border as well. I also put things on my cork board besides just paper things that are important and I need to remember. I hung up a key chain and a really pretty ribbon book mark that has a cross on the end and I also put a card someone gave me and made it so I can flip it open or closed and also during Christmas I hung up a little miniature Christmas stocking; I think it gives it more character and makes it not look so flat. I also thought it would be cool to find a way to replace the original border with a nice ornate looking frame but I don't know if I can find one that is inexpensive and will fit my cork board. But yeah a cork board could be a fun way to spice up your dorm room.

Ash (ashiew) Also something I totally forgot to mention that I did is I sew. Well I am learning to sew. For my birthday last year my parents got me a sewing machine which was so thoughtful of them. My parents are so sweet. My mom hand sews quilts and I have been wanting to learn to sew as well. So now that I have a sewing machine I have been experimenting with some things. The machine is kind of hard to use so I am still getting used to it, but it is so much fun.

message 36: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Ashley: Just be carful of fingers with a sewing machine, go slow at first until your confident enough to go faster xx :)

Darby | 217 comments Ashley: my grandma is a crazy quilter and her sewing machine LIVES on our kitchen table. She tried to teach me how to use it but I went allllllllll over the place. I felt like a disappointment to women everywhere. Especially those in her family.

Same thing happened to me. I tried to make a straight line and it just curved like crazy. It is so hard to be precise on those machines. And you are not a disappointment, I mean look at all the other awesome things you can do. It just takes some practice and learning. And if a sewing machine isn't for you then it is no big deal. You just do you and be proud of what you do. Never feel disappointed for trying something new. :)

message 40: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Ashley/Darby: think of it this way, nobody can sew a completely straight line so it will be individual to you!! I can't sew straight but I prefer it!! It gives a handmade feel and I like imperfections! And as you pointed out 'never feel disappointed for trying something new', which is an awesome new quote of mine now!! How do people come up with these!!! I'll live by it xx :)

Darby | 217 comments Machine sewing just isn't for me, I'm better with the hand stuff (though horribly out of practice, like yikes). My strong suits are mending socks/shirts, and putting on buttons.

Good point. I love the hand made feel of things, like how not one thing is completely like another thing you made. I guess I just need to start self destroying everything I do and try to feel proud and accomplished of myself sometimes. Thanks :)

You can hand sew stuff? That is so awesome! :)

Darby | 217 comments Ashley: what's even more awesome is that the 85 year old woman who I grew up next to taught me how. She was amazing at sewing. She was basically the main event at our town Quilters show. Also the road she lived on was named after her family and she owned the church next to my house. That woman won at everythingggggggg. But I'm really only capable of mending because I haven't properly practiced in about 8 years. Oops.

But currently I'm in a rough spot with my knitting because the new yarn I bought isn't the same shade as the old yarn I had..... Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar

Zahro That woman sounds so cool. XD
I can mend a little too but wasn't really taught how. I'd watch my mum a lot as a kid so later was like 'eeh this looks right-ish' but my grandma also showed me how to fix my blazer pockets. :)

Paulina (littledreammer) | 5 comments I recently moved from home. And I found a room with empty and very spacious walls. So I thought: Why not decorate it all myself?
And I started to do several things. It was very cute.
At the end of I realized that I like crafts and I´m good at it. It's a fun way to pass the time :)

message 49: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Paulina: arg I wish I could decorate. I'm lousy with color schemes so almost every day is a struggle of "does this outfit clash?" I just lie and say I'm color blind XD
