Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments After doing a few worldcat searches with different english and german keywords, I stumbled on the following. Even having next to no information as to the contents, a few things are correct, others glaringly wrong. Have ordered a used paperback and will report back.

Verschwunden im Bermuda-Dreieck (translates as Vanished in the Bermuda-Triangle, although Lost instead of Vanished might be more accurate).
Author: Martin Caidin; Burkhard Busse
Published: Munich: Wilhelm Heyne, 1980.

So, the authors are certainly pronounceable, contents are unkown yet, but Publisher and format (Paperback, a picture shows it to be slim) are what I remember, although the cover-page does not seem familiar. And 1980 is earlier than I thought, but may be it was a cheap sale a few years later for clearing out unwanted books.

If I am wrong, it was worth a try. And as one of the authors is english and can be found here on Goodreads, Martin Caidin the books which are listed here look like some of their general themes may fit with my memories of style and story, a little SF, some movie-books-additions, etc. .

Good hound dogging on this! I am not only keen to know if this is the book, but also to read your review of it once you've read it.

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments A few days ago (quite fast) I received the book, it is sadly not the book I searched for, sorry. Cannot promise a review, I might read it now to be really sure, but the last book from this search I tried ended not being read for being boring.

But now I know the original English title of this book, and it is here on Goodreads:
Three Corners to Nowhere by Martin Caidin Three Corners to Nowhere

Also interesting to note, while there are a few different covers shown (Amazon, etc.), only the German translation features a woman. It is ok, as in the blurb a missing daughter is mentioned, so there is a woman, but how significant she is for the story remains to be seen.

As German is my first language, and it is quite small, I might read it really fast. The only text review here on Goodreads speaks of a surprise ending. Hopefully it is a good thriller?!

message 56: by Waldo (new)

Waldo Varjak | 98 comments So, is Three Corners to Nowhere the book you're searching for?

message 57: by Ingo (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Still reading the German translation, while it is not dull (yet), but nothing like I remembered happens. Definitely not the book I am looking for.

Admittedly my memory is hazy, but I am on page 72 from 175 so, I am quite sure, that will not change, sorry.
Also the print is quite small, and I cannot change the font-size, Wiki-lookup and search does not work either, the GUI is sorely lacking. Whoever designed this book could learn a few things from Amazon, Sony and Kobo (to name a few) ... .

message 58: by Waldo (new)

Waldo Varjak | 98 comments Thanks for that update. Sorry it's not the book.

It is a solid 3 stars, and although from 1975 does not feel too dated, they smoke a lot, and there are a few macho-sexist remarks, but no swearing, nothing racist.

Just to state it again: still searching.

I am not sure, I just looked at it again, and honestly cannot remember. The book you mention warrants a second look, I cannot find a detailed description, but will order it used now, it is cheap enough, but might take a few weeks to arrive (USA to Germany, books will usually be send the cheapest way).
As Bermuda is even in the title, I should have checked this earlier, maybe I overlooked it. But I did not find a any German translation of his books, so I think the chance is slim.
Hopefully it is still a good read.

Thanks for your reminder and the help, I will report back after receiving it and checking it out and reading (part or all).
Ordered it, may take till August 09th, 2017 as per sellers/amazon's estimate.

And then I looked again in Wikipedia for the Death Merchant-series:

#37 The Bermuda Triangle Action "The Russians are drilling along a fault line in the Atlantic, where a few well-placed hydrogen bombs could cause catastrophe for the U.S.".

Both this and the cover-art (diver / submarine in background) is nothing like I remember from the book, it may have some part with Russians, but from the rest I should have remembered something (unless it was cut for the German translation, as mentioned somewhere in this thread by me for other books).

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments August Bump.
Sorry I did not comment earlier, received the book "Bermuda Triangle Action" by Joseph Rosenberger July 26th, 2017. As feared, the font is very little, but I skimmed it just now, and while it certainly looks interesting, it is mostly about conflict with Russia, and a lot of men, no sex, I think.

So, still searching, sorry. But thanks for the help and I will still try to read it and deliver a review sometime.

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments October Bump, currently cold but with sunny spells here in Hamburg, Germany.
Yet, the last few days it was raining heavily, flooding parts, heavy storms - 2 days in row with severe warnings of high wind-speeds, asking us not to go outside, and people died. Our German Trains, unreliable at the best of times, have major lines (Berlin - Hannover, Hamburg - Hannover and others) with fallen trees and other stuff, and have to be cleared and sometimes repaired, not even sure when service will be normal again.
Yeah, I might take your advice and crawl back into bed, light my Kindle and drink some warm cocoa, thanks!
Still hoping, still searching.

Waldo Varjak | 98 comments Monday the 9th was Canadian Thanksgiving. You can thank Canada for that I suppose.

And hopefully by the time American Thanksgiving comes in November, you'll be able to thank someone here for providing us the title of this book.

And being so close to Christmas by then, may be Santa will get involved. You've certainly earned it with this long suffering request. [Here's another bump to your topic for the weekend.]

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments November Bump, UK Bonfires burned on November 5th, Guy Fakes Day, plan to see the mini-TV-series Gunpowder, by chance this is also the Birthday of my niece (the daughter of my older sister), which we celebrated Sunday. Was wearing one of my "V"-for-Vendetta-T-Shirts, but it was too cold, so had a pullover over that. And all this has nothing whatsoever to do with this search.

message 72: by Waldo (new)

Waldo Varjak | 98 comments Well, it is December now and way too cold for any T-shirts. Hopefully when the season changes and the weather grows warmer, the pullover will reveal V for victory!

A little over two weeks before the days start getting longer....

Kelly (khek) | 270 comments I vaguely remember reading something similar...were there at least three books? And did the villain/enemy of the James Bond friend have a magical ponytail? If he lost it, he lost all his enhanced strength?

If so, I think I read them in the 80s. As I remember, they were regular adult-sized paperbacks, and I think they were published by Ace Books.

message 80: by Ingo (last edited Jan 11, 2018 06:45AM) (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Interestingly this is the first time someone wrote about reading something like this or even the same.
Cannot confirm three books, nor a magical ponytail, but as I read 1 book, this may have happened in the other two books or I may have forgotten that?!
And this gives me two more pieces to search with (ponytail and ace books).
Thank you! (Added: and the timeframe looks good, 80ies).

I will try to remember more! I think the villain's name might have been Gideon. In one of the books there was a lightning machine..I think "Gideon" was killed and brought back to life with the machine, meaner and harder to defeat. I'll keep thinking!

message 87: by Ingo (last edited May 09, 2018 12:31AM) (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments And the May bump.
To be sure, I just skimmed through the suggestion:
The Bermuda Triangle Action by Joseph Rosenberger.
While it was interesting, it contained of a story of (suggested) Alien entities, and a lot of fight scenes, Russians against USA.
There where no sex-scenes, and only men as far as I saw.
While a lot of suspense, and I would read it, if it was not for the small print (would like an ebook), it is not the book I am searching for, none of the scenes where there.
It was a good suggestion, at least the Bermuda Triangle was a main theme in the book and it strayed into SF with the Alien Intelligent Entities.
Still searching and hoping.

message 88: by Ingo (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Regarding the Bermuda Triangle, that I consider now a maybe, it might also have been Atlantis, imho. Or just a strange Island in the nowhere? Sorry my memory is so foggy. Edited subject accordingly.

Waldo Varjak | 98 comments I'm getting discouraged not having this (and another query I am following) unsolved for months and months.

Also, Mods, since this is not my thread I am not under any implied or explicit rule not to bump this thread myself as often as I wish. (Just do not count on me to Bump this every day because it's not my top of mind and I do not think overly annoying reminders like spam work. However, I am glad to help out.)

message 90: by Ingo (last edited May 11, 2018 10:43AM) (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments Sorry Waldo, but you are doing me a disservice here.
Not helping!
And I am not discouraged, and see no point in bumping more often, even if it is a grey zone, it is not your thread.

Also, just to be clear, if I miss a bump for more than a few weeks, you can safely say, I am gone for good, be it 6 ft. under, or some other way, then this will probably never get solved, and I will not be able to care.

Actually the rule applies to everyone, not just the thread creator. The purpose is to have some amount of control over the number of posts in the group, which is an extremely large group and always growing. If everyone went around bumping other people's threads before the 30 day limit, there would be bedlam.

And Ingo, do not give up hope yet. It has taken up to seven (7!) years to have a book solved. Just bump it up whenever you want to, and more people will see it, and eventually someone HAS to know it!

This is a special circumstance (as far as I can tell) and you are very respectful as by your track record. To vary the pattern, to jig for fish as I might say, could be a winning strategy. At least you won't slip through the cracks.

But I will respect your wishes. I am not often online these days.
