I'm using My Cousin Rachel for Prompt #1 - A book made into a movie you've already seen. Just started reading it, and I'm enjoying it.

Sarah (sezziy) | 901 comments My library just acquired Quests for Glory and I'm dying to read it. Any ideas where it would go? (I've already read something for the next book in the series prompt so that one's out.)

Perhaps the author is local or of a different ethnicity than you?

Sarah (sezziy) | 901 comments Nadine wrote: "Perhaps the author is local or of a different ethnicity than you?"

I am pretty sure the author is American so not local to me (English) but different ethnicity will work. In fact, I think that's the same prompt that I used the first book in the series for last year. Silly me!

Mental health or, at a stretch, animal in title (from Lord of the Rings - oliphants/mumakil are the big elephant things - I've seen other participants use fantasy creatures so it should be fine).

Emma (emmabluerose) | 28 comments I just started reading Big Little Lies but I am not sure where it fits. I know that one of the characters has twin sons so maybe #30 A book with characters who are twins, but I wondered if anyone has other ideas.

Thanks!

I read Big Little Lies for a previous year's challenge: "antonyms in the title."

message 510: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 395 comments Hi all.. The book The Magdalen Girls by V.S. Alexander, can I use that for the prompt a novel based on a real person? The author doesn't use specific names of real people in the book, but the experiences of the characters are based on what happened to the women in the magdalene laundries.

message 511: by Aimee Dars (new)

Aimee Dars (aimeedars) | 102 comments Bhavna wrote: "How can I use Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine? Which prompt will it fit?"

It can also be used for 32. A book from a celebrity book club (Reese Witherspoon).

Carol Roote | 119 comments Crumb wrote: "Floor wrote: "Crumb wrote: "I'm doing a buddy read starting on the 1st of January.. and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on where Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah..."

I am a biologist. A firefly is absolutely an animal! So, yes, this book would fit in that category.

Naina (naynay55) | 113 comments Any ideas for where to slate Gun Love? I've currently put it in for "a book published in 2018" but any other prompt options would be great to know!

Mike | 443 comments Naina wrote: "Any ideas for where to slate Gun Love? I've currently put it in for "a book published in 2018" but any other prompt options would be great to know!"

This is a real stretch, but if you count backwards lyrics, Kiss had a hit in the 70s with Love Gun.

Tania | 678 comments Carol wrote: "Hello, All. Could someone please tell me where The Women in the Castle fits in? My book club is reading it. Thanks in advance."

Since it mentions Adolf Hitler in the description, I'd think you could use it as a novel based on a real person. It could also be a country that fascinates you.

This would fit in as a problem facing society today.

Since I'm reading The Invention of Wings for a novel based on a read person and
At the Water's Edge for a country that fascinates me, do any of you think that The Women in the Castle would fit as a book with an ugly cover?
Or would those other two fit somewhere else?

Thanks again.

Well, "ugly cover" is completely, 100% subjective. If you think it's ugly, then it counts as "ugly."

There's also a movie version that you rent/buy/check out from your library and watch before reading the book.

I think several people are using "song lyrics" for Never Let Me Go.

message 528: by Carol (new)

Carol Roote | 119 comments Lucy wrote: "Anyone have any suggestions about where Never Let Me Go could fit?"

I was going to use it for #14 a book by an author of a different ethnicity than me, but then I read something else for that prompt.

Maybe a book about death or grief for Hamlet? I'm not familiar with Sister Carrie.

You could use Hamlet for mental health. He definitely shows characteristics of both depression and mania.

Trigger Warning can work for "previous category" - in 2015 there was a category "short stories" (and I read Trigger Warnings for it! )

Cendaquenta | 718 comments Bhavna wrote: "Hi which prompt can I use for The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain? Thanks"

Maybe #39, "a book involving a bookstore or library", since the main character is a bookseller.
If your favourite colour is red, you could use it for #21, or if France interests you, #7.

Jacklyn | 16 comments I want to read The Three-Body Problem but I'm not sure if it will fit anywhere. There is definitely stuff happening on another planet, but I don't know if it could fit a book set on another planet because it sounds mostly like stuff is happening on Earth. Any ideas?

message 540: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 9683 comments Mod
Three Body is all set on Earth, so I don't think it qualifies for "another planet." Yes, there are aliens, but the action is all on Earth.

Possible categories:
- country that fascinates you (most of the book takes place in China)
- Different ethnicity (if you're not Chinese)
- Two authors (if you read a translated version, and count the translator as a second author)
- Celebrity book club (Mark Zuckerberg apparently leads a book club!)
- Cyberpunk (this one is a stretch, a big part of the pot involves people logging into a computer game that creates a simulated world, in which they interact with each other - the punk part is the stretch, it's not terribly "punky " - the gamers ARE a secret society, so there's covert action, at least)
- recommended by another Popsugar participant - I recommend this book!!!

Oh! You could also use it for a previous category (two time periods) because the beginning is set during the Chinese revolution.

It's a very strange and dense book, and it really made an impression on me, I hope you like it too!! I still need to read the third book in the series.

Also works for death/grief, or a book made into a movie you've already seen

There's a movie based on it, so maybe prompt #1 if you go and watch that first, or Advanced #8 (a microhistory).
