Zaara | 4273 comments Something very cool happened today...see I thought I lost my beloved and throughly battered and worn copy of Elantris somewhere on a trip like ten thousand years ago...and never had hope of seeing it agn...
So I leave these piles of paperbacks everywhere I go...stashes on every continent....I swear, if it were all collected in one place 😱😱😱
Anyway my hosts are welcome to my stuff while I'm gone and they usually take very good care of it...and if they travel they usually drop it off somewhere they know I'll stop by.
There's this site called 'bookcrossing'...i swear...me and my mates have this mini bookcrossing industry going all on our own...
Point is that darling thing has turned up somewhere in Singapore for Chrissake...and its so UGLY and messed up now...its spine is curved Iain...like a ridgeback crone...and I love it to bits...I'm literally crooning over it...and I have pics for Siobhan and everything...
Meanwhiiiiile....I notice you lot have an Elantris BR set up...

Zaara | 4273 comments Oh you know nothing, Jon Snow Iain McWhateverYouzNameIs...
I have phases...I'll either be intensely social or so hermitty that ppl have been known to heard to cry: "Where the heck is that DitzyLoud and why don't she say anything? All this *snort* peace and quiet is torture..."
I once spent three months in a cave...doing nothing, speaking to nobody, heck, i didnt see another human being ...all I did was watch the sun rise and set on yon distant snowy peaks...a bit of writing...
Best 3 months EVAAAAARRR....
Jezzt call me "Silent Sister"

By the way...none of these innuendos are gonna fly if you haven't read ASOIAF...

I haven't read ASOIAF... and I'm so hermity that I can hardly talk anymore... having to work together with a guy at work these past few months improved my voice a bit... it doesn't cut out as quick anymore... but my throat still starts to go dry and hurt relatively quickly...

I have a car for going to work mostly... I put about 3300 miles on it each year... 2500 of them is driving to work and back each day (5 miles each way 250 days/year + 2 trips out of town on Thanksgiving and Christmas)

This is a HERMIT-OFF!!! lol

Which you win xcuz my voice functions perfectly, tk you very much.
How do you think I keep those schoolkids glued to the book swottery...
Hehe the poor trainee...wish I coulda see his face when you suddenly...jezzt...cut out...

EDIT the *ouch* moment when I see that you've said this doesn't happen too much anymore...
No long phone calls back home to Auchtermuchty?
😂😂😂😂 but why lad, whyyyyy? Now suppose if I were your grandma or bro, I'd miss ye terribly. Arnd Christmas especially...
You can't be the Good Father HelpAll to everybody on the planet and leave out Auchtermuchty...its no fair. And *pbbbbbth* at the extremity of your hermithood.
Which I jezzt realise....is none of my business.
Sorry, Lain daaaaaaahlin' like Yanique said...somewhere....you make all practical strangers feel like they're old friends.
So I totally blame you!

Zaara | 4273 comments Aaah...so a little explain is in order...
The Silent Sistahs are these creepy nuns who don't speak...they minister to corpses n stuff...

'You know nothing, Jon Snow' is jezzt a very famous catchphrase. Which I can't explain bcuz it would on;y just spoil (view spoiler)

I've been working overnights for 7 years now... I really do get by on the least amount of talking necessary most times... my Goodreads participation to the contrary...

Any gains I've made on my voice the last few weeks seem to be reverting I think... I don't have to talk as much now that I've mostly trained my coworker... at this point I'm failing at training him any further... the language barrier and backsliding are getting in the way...

And it's never cut out cut out (unless I get sick like this time of year causes)... I just have to drink a lot of water or cough drops to keep soothing it...

I think I know you know nothing Jon Snow... I watched the first 4 seasons of the show...

message 16: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments I'd encourage you to start ASOIAF...but the waiting is just hellish...

I've only watched halfway thru Season 2. Big love for Dinklage. For everyone...Gleeson is SO well cast...I can't even...
*Loathe face*

message 17: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Was Chalion any good? And Sweaters 2? Laura tells me she loved it.
I'm jealous of y'all who stay together and travel in (reading) packs...
I just lope off after Book 1 like a nice hermitwolf...altho' this could be more about my reading speed than my devil may care aloofness...

message 18: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments *sigh* i'm never gonna stick a series thru to the end with you lot unless I cancel everything else to keep up, right?
I better go and update all these trackers and challenge threds and whatnot...

message 19: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments And then I came bk to ask this one thing I been meaning...how do y'all afford so many audiobooks? Those things are goshdarn expensive...
I run to paperbacks because of the aforementioned worldwide stashing mentality....

And all my creepy little notations from when I read books..,I write IN them,,,
I can feel the gasps and shudders rippling arnd the thread at my defacery...

The uglier them books get...the more I like 'em.

And where the heck is Andy? I only been logging on for the last ten thousand years three days to look for him and that dude is...never....but never....online despite solemnly swearing that he always IS.

message 26: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8703 comments Haha when I put my phone down to read I don't see replies for a bit unless one of them triggers an email, which your photo comment did apparently!

I love writing in books... I know, it seems weird, why would we want to deface them? But it's a reminder of your thoughts at the time. My old battered copy of To Kill a Mockingbird (favourite book of all time) is covered in notes.

Several...very boisterous ppl...
My mates are the best...the best...
And I think they wanna surprise me and (I'm sooooo gonna act surprised) but *shameful comfession* I peeked and saw + heard the furtive sounds of WoK and WoR being wrapped up and beribboned.
For me.
Xmas + bday, daaaaaaahlin'
Like I said....my mates really ARE....the Best(e)...speaking of which, where is that gal?
@Beste, where you? Did WoT swallow you whole?

message 28: by Zaara (last edited Dec 19, 2017 11:08AM) (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments I love Mockingbird too, Siobhan.
I don't even wanna read Go Set a Watchman for fear of ruining...
We must never go back to the places that make us perfectly happy, no?
Or we will find they are changed. And the happiness...or perhaps I should use the word saudade has all just been in our minds...
But does that make it any less real?
:-O
Aaaand on that note...let me end with the creepy philosophical tangent and say that someday...far far in the future...I'd like to see the batteredness of your Lee. And I sooooo wouldn't mind a peek at those notes either.
We should do a few non-fantasy BRs. Without the threads n all...just chat on the status updates...
But not in 2018 😂😂😂😂😂 apparently...next year I swear FBR HAS EATEN MY 2018.
I blame Malazan...
So there!

message 29: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8703 comments I will take some pictures for you!
I'm about due a reread to he honest. Yeah my 2018 is so planned out already, it's scary.

I read Go Set a Watchman. It wasn't great unfortunately. I was half excited and half sad when it was released. I don't think anything will ever actually ruin Mockingbird for me though.

Also, I'm hopefully getting WoK and WoR for Xmas too! XD I asked my mum for them so fingers crossed!

Anni | 5066 comments I have to butt in here :D I don't usually write in my books, but I am part of the Traveling Book Project Germany :) There you could send a book all around Germany and everyone is writing his/her thoughts down while reading. Or you mark your favourite scenes or just doodle. After traveling around the book goes back to the owner and he/she will have a special and absolute unique copy :) It is so much fun reading these commented books, sometimes it is like someone is sitting there beside you (not in a creepy way, haha) and discuss the book with you while reading.

You could find a few pictures here (I hope it works...) https://www.instagram.com/explore/tag...
there are also a few where you could see books with a lot of comments. Everyone use another color so they became so colorful :)

Anni that is such a cool idea! I wonder if there's a similar project in the UK... Have you had a book back all doodled and noted up yet? :)

message 35: by Anni (new)

I also read many other Traveling books and sometimes 9-10 people read them before and it is very interesting to see the different opinions and enjoy the stunning drawings...
Good luck with finding something alike, if you don't you should start it yourself ;)

I fell asleep shortly after my last post... woke up long enough to turn off slow cooker and just go to sleep for the day...

I liked Curse of Chalion enough to start the author's Vorkosigan Saga sci-fi series on the side... and Sweaters 2 went a lot faster for me than the first... it was when I started experimenting with speeding up the audiobooks I listen to...

Audiobooks aren't as expensive as they were before audible existed... that was the first step in my transition... the next is all the new features of libraries these days... most libraries have some collection of audiobooks available... and as others have mentioned, with the online services available these days you can digitally checkout books from Hoopla and Overdrive and the like with your library card...

So there's that... then I have the 24 books for $230 audible subscription I have... that gets the price down to $9.50 per book... which is about the price of a new paperback... but I don't even want to pay that if I don't have to... next is their daily $4 book deals... and checking whispersync for voice to get the books for $4 when the ebook is cheaper than $5.50 (if the ebook is on sale or cheap)... and then Audible does bulk books sales, or 2 books for 1 credit sales... it all piles up... and if I run out of credits i can just get more... either 3 at a time or renewing my subscription early...

It helps that my living expenses are relatively cheap... my coworkers exaggerate that I'm rich... when really, I just don't have to spend all my money raising kids like they do... kids are expensive these days... everything is, really... but kids are what makes anything close to minimum wage hard to live on...

This post has gotten really long and I haven't even read all the comments I missed yet, so I'm gonna break this into multiple posts...

I'm not sure if i ever read To Kill a Mockingbird... but I remember all the hype around Go Set a Watchman... and it all sounded very exploitative... like some people found an old manuscript and convinced the old lady to release it so they could make a cash grab...

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments one more thread to lurk around. :D:D

message 40: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Re fell asleep....yep...I figured...after about five minutes...luckily Siobhan and Anni took pity on me and turned up to chat or else who knows how log I'd hv gone on talking to myself
😂😂😂
Btw, great thread idea, Iain...such a vibrant discussion. Everyone's input...
Three great threads in one day...I like the yearly wraps too...those'll be useful.

Ok I opened all Siobhan and Anni's links.....

@Siobhan...you obviously love this book and that soooo suits you IMO! Don'tcha love when the papers and cover get buttery soft and yellowed...if I were fancy...I'd use the word patina...and oh...it was nice to see your handwriting too. Puts more than face to name, in a nice old-fashioned way, no? I'm all for the beauty of the written word. There's something visceral about pen on paper that no email or typeface can EVER capture. Of course, the truth is...I'm in the wrong century, Shivaan lass. I belong to a much older time + have a very medieval mind/sensibilities.

@Anni...wow those pics look great...ppl are so talented really at framing and composing their shots. Thks for the eye candy + enjoyable looking at everyone's notations and doodles, right? And the pleasure is only doubled when you have the actual book in your hands. There's a wide selection of books on there and some beautiful covers. That Wuthering Heights one...reminds me of Jasmine Beckett-Griffiths...the eyes...
I have a lot of penpals arnd the world. I'm all for travelling books and journals...heck, I do some ferrying ;-) along with the doodling.

@Manu...why lurk? Stick around, kik my arse if I get off track and funk up the challenge...keep me accountable...generally be the Thread Bawss 😎
