Jonathan | 26 comments I bought Badenheim 39 in a secondhand bookshop just before xmas. I hadn't heard of author or book before, it just looked interesting. Was it good?

message 10: by Guy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Guy Not an easy question to answer: was it good? Yes. Did I like it? No.
I understand that the Nazis treated Jews like vermin, and the book approaches its subject that way. Sanitation inspectors arrive in the resort town and soon people are made to register (etc). Then jews are required to register with the dept. People who left Poland years ago start talking about being able to go back and how wonderful it will be ...
There's a lot of denial and wishful thinking. It's an allegorical satire.
Humour and the holocaust just doesn't work for me. Just like that film Life is Beautiful
