Author Millers The Crucible is a play about the Salem Witch Trial in which many girls was hung for being a “witch” because that’s what people assumed they were, even though they weren’t witches. During that time Proctor had tried to put an end to it because he wanted the deaths of innocent people to stop yet in order to have solid proof he would’ve had to confess about the affair and ruin his good name. Arthur Miller uses pathos and logos in his play The Crucible to show the facts and how it was, in order for people to understand what happened, it all brings back to the whole communist thing because being a communist was known as a bad thing, just like it was bad to be a witch.
Miller used pathos in his play to make the audience feel the shock or the sadness he wanted them to feel. To feel horrified for what happened during the Salem Witch Trial. The fear people had that witches where among them and most importantly the sadness and grief someone had when they were accused of witchcraft or when someone’s family member was accused of witchcraft. Throughout the play, people where getting accused of witchcraft, mainly by Abigail, one of them being Elizabeth Proctor, which hurts Proctor when she was taken away for something that wasn’t true, such as Mary Warren given Elizabeth a poppet, which was claimed to be a voodoo doll and that Elizabeth was apparently doing voodoo magic on Abigail, when really Mary gave Elizabeth the poppet as a way to frame her. “Elizabeth: John—I think I must go with them. He cannot bear to look at her Mary, there is bread enough for the morning; you will bake in the afternoon…To Proctor When the children wake, speak nothing of the witchcraft—it will frighten them. She cannot go on”(Miller 73). Before Elizabeth is taken away she is heartbroken that she would have to be possibly hung for being a witch, she is also scared since she wouldn’t be able to see her children and husband again. During the Red Scare people were afraid that they would be accused of being a communist if they actually weren’t a communist, which developed a sense of fear and paranoia much like what happened during the witch trials. Miller uses logos to put facts into his play on whom all got accused and what the characters’ were like back then and basic facts from the Salem Witch Trials so people at least got an understanding. During the talk between Proctor and Elizabeth, Proctor learns that 14 women were arrested and when he speaks to Mary Warren to get it confirmed he learns there is now 39 women. “Proctor: Mary. She halts Is it true? There be fourteen women arrested? Mary: No sir. There be thirty-nine now— She suddenly breaks off and sobs and sits down, exhausted” (Miller 53). There were many people accused of witchcraft and killed unless they confessed to protect themselves from being hung, which some of the girls did so they didn’t get killed for something that wasn’t true. Back during the Red Scare, people were accused of being a communist even if they were not, resulting in being jailed even for no reason, just like what happened during the Salem Witch Trials.
When the witch trials were going on people were accused of being a witch with no proof and many people jailed for it as well as hung while during the Red Scare people got accused for being a communist and put in jail but not killed. However during both the Witch Trials and the Red Scare, fear was spread around the place they begun in. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible he connected it to the Red Scare because of the fear going around and the anger he felt when his friend was accused of communism and when people were put in jail because of being a “communist” even though they might’ve been completely innocent.
