Title doesn't turn me on (I'm a lifelong meditator) but I want to participate in the discussion, newbie to Goodreads. Yeah, ok, sorta, ha! Count me in.

Count me in."You should check out his first book 10% Happier - Dan Harris is a reporter/anchor on ABC and had a couple of panic attacks on network television. He's a fidgety skeptic that has researched the subject of meditation and has a really interesting take on it as just an Average Joe - he's now been meditating for years. His podcast is really good too (also called 10% Happier).
Lisa, thanks for mentioning the podcast. I didn't know he had one. I love a good podcast and can't wait to check it out!
I over committed and am behind on this, but I have started it. I like Dan's writing style but sometime the self-effacing attitude gets on my nerves now. When I read his first book, I was right there with him. I'm now passed that sentiment and it seems like he should be too.... I will do better and get after this title. :)
Lisa,
No apologies and no “getting better” at reading. Life intervened. We all can relate.
Whenever you get to it is fine. Just jump into the discussion when you’ve read through the first third of the book.
I’m with you on Dan. He got on my nerves too, but overall there’s good stuff in the book.

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season so far.
To get 2018 started on the right foot, I thought it would be good to do a group read about a meditation book--and lo and behold, this one came across my radar.
Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics, by Dan Harris, is a lighthearted yet serious book about all the reasons we keep ourselves from meditating. Of course, it also includes lots of instruction and tips about various ways to meditate, and how to fit it into your busy life.
The author is the same guy who wrote the bestseller 10% Happier, which is based on the similar premise that doing a little is a lot better than doing nothing.
The book's pub date is the end of December, but it's already on sale on Amazon. It's a little pricey--$17 for hardcover (no paperback yet), $14 for Kindle--but I thought it might be a good thing to put on your holiday wish list. Or, treat yourself to the gift of this book and a year of great meditations. Or, of course, try to get it from your library.
We'll start reading as a group in January. I'll post questions about the first third of the book (ending before the chapter, "People Might Think I'm Weird") sometime around January 10th. Check back on this thread around that time to share what you're getting (or not getting) from the book to that point. I've read the first chapter and it's an easy read with important information.
If you think you're interested (even if you later change your mind), please add your name to this thread, so I can get a sense of who might be participating.
Happy Holidays!! Here's to a terrific 2018!
