At 25%.
Once again there is a big time skip between books, this time it is 3 years. I have obviously become used to series books where the series arc follows quite tightly from one book to the next. I find it disconcerting on beginning each book that I have to work out where I am in the world, and what has happened since the last book. These books appear almost as standalone episodes with a few loosely woven overreaching arcs connecting them.

The Long Price Quartet might not be for you, then... we read it earlier this year, and each book jumps 10+ years... In the prologue of the first book, the MC is in his teens, by the end of the 4-book series he is 60-70...

I don't mind the time-jumps here... otherwise this would just be a series about Tavi's training... this lets us get a glimpse at the high points of Tavi's life, presumably building to (view spoiler)[ him becoming First Lord (hide spoiler)], as per the book titles...

Reading long series, as I do, I kinda find it weird how tight the timelines can be sometimes... I've read all 40-45 In Death books that have released over the past 26 years, and only 3 years have passed in the books... if the Sookie Stackhouse books have a similar timeline to the show, they span less than a year... the 5-6 books I read this year make that seem likely...

I started at work last night... I'm liking it, and can't wait to see how the plotlines all merge again, as they usually do...

So much stuff happened in the prologue, that I was surprised I hadn't reached chapter 1 yet...

This series kinda reminds me of Wheel of Time... you think there are enough threats, and then another rears it's head... the Vord, the Canum, (view spoiler)[civil war (hide spoiler)], etc...

Not exactly, it's an accelerated schedule, so Captain's Fury starts in 18 days. It's not 'RIGHT NOW', but maybe it helps a little ;)

I'll soldier on... don't want to say too much about the later parts of this, I don't think... hard not to spoil things, but I loved it...

Ending thoughts: (view spoiler)[So Tavi being Kitai's "spirit animal" lets them share powers, it seems... he gains her night vision and strength (slowly) and she gains his Furycrafting (maybe)... assuming that's what is happening at the end there... it's hard to tell... it seems less like he's Furycrafting than just telling the light to turn on and off somehow... it doesn't sound like what other Furycrafters do...

Canum: I liked how he let the mother go... I was hoping for more there, somehow, since he can communicate in their language... seems pretty clear the Vord have taken over the Canum homeland... this is going to be bad... the Vord gets to use and abuse whatever they gain with their mind control... Aleran magic, Canum strength... Canum ritualists?... makes me wonder how much Soll was responsible for the Vord takeover of the Canum homeland... (hide spoiler)]

I wasn't too enamoured at the start, but by the end of the novel I was really enjoying it! I'm looking forward to the next book although I personally would've liked it if (view spoiler)[ Tavi had remained 'unfuried'. I hope he gets acknowledged by the First Lord soon. (hide spoiler)]

Finished (view spoiler)[I really enjoyed this one I felt the writing was tightened up a lot the battle scenes didn't drag as they did in the second one. I can see the point about preferring Tavi to be Furyless but but the title of the books always suggested that he was going to come into a Fury at some stage.
On Tavi's parentage (view spoiler)[ In hindsight I assume that this is a discussion about Tavi's parentage rather than his fury as I thought at the time:
At 37% in book#1 Bernard: “What about Tavi? He should know.”
She shook her head. “No. Now more than ever, no. He doesn’t need that on his head.”
Bernard looked unhappy with her words, but did not gainsay them. ....And on meeting Amara “Have you come for the boy?” Isana asked. “Are you here to take him?”

Finished! I liked this one way more than the first two books :) (view spoiler)[ I like that Marcus was actually Phidelias, even if he is supposed to be the enemy (or isn't anymore) I liked him somehow, because he's really clever.

I'm not sure I like the fact that Taci (and Kitai?) finally gets his elemental power, but I will see ;) (hide spoiler)]
