Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments I thought it would be fun to share what our 2018 Reading Related Resolutions are. Am hoping if I actually commit and type my resolutions down, I might actually do them.

Here are mine:

1. Finish ALL of the books in my "Want to Read" folder that were added in 2015 and 2016.

2. Read at least 24 non-fiction books.

3. Read more of a diverse group of books (instead of mostly mystery).

4. Read actual books that I own. Managed to read 20 this year. I feel I could do better... Let's say 22 books.

OK, those were mine... how about yours.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I plan to take the RWYO challenge next yr, though I don't have a number yet. With my new job, my reading isn't going to be what it was before. And yet I like having my yearly challenge at 50 books/year and I usually surpass that. I might make my yearly challenge 50 again anyway.

Also, 2018 is the year I get to the Mortal Instruments series. I don't think I'll be catching up or getting to the other books in that universe, but I'd like to get to that first series. See how far I get, if I feel like completing it or not.

I've got a lot of anticipated releases next year, so I don't know how much other reading I'll be getting to besides these. I also need to complete/catch up on a bunch of trilogies I started this year.

I think my big reading resolution will be to complete series that have ended! I have a shoddy list that I made this year that I hope to make pretty and actually use. I'm going to *try* not to start any new series next year. Ha. Good one, I know. But a caveat to that would if I start a new series, it will have to be complete already! Hoping to stick to this.

And of course, read the books on my shelves! Shooting for reading more off my physical shelves than buying!

message 4: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I keep going back and forth on this, but if I'm going to set my reading challenge at 50, I'm going to make my RWYO goal 18. I know compared to most people here, that's not much, but I'd also like to do more rereads next year too, and I'm not counting those. This, on top of the 5 new releases I'm dying to get to as opposed to 2 or 3, leaves a lot less room in my impulse-reads.

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments Elyse wrote: "I think my big reading resolution will be to complete series that have ended!"

I like that one! I think I am slowly trying to finish off some series, but I am still jumping around. At this rate, I will finish these series by 2020...

BTW, have you ever read the Mrs. Polifax series? She is great. I hope I am as feisty as Mrs. P. when I get to that age...

She's in my TBR! But too many books in the series so I will probably not start her next year!

I need my impulse reads. I don't like knowing EVERYTHING I'm going to read for the whole year, even though I know pretty much what I'm going to be getting to through March 2018 already . . .

Most of my books are impulse reads. I *don't* like having to stick to a list. lol. Most of my lists are pretty tentative.

I've thought of more! So as much as it pains me, I don't think I'm going to participate in Book Riot, Better World Books, or Popsugar challenges next year. I have too many books to read without trying to find books to fit categories. I'm perfectly fine with the diversity of my reading.

I went from iOS to Android over a year ago and I still have about 25 iBooks on my iPod Touch that I *will* read next year! Those will be first on my "list."

Then I have about 90 (EEP!) ebooks from RivetedLit saved as bookmarks on my phone. They're all YA so they're all 200-300 pages and I usually breeze through them. I'd like to get through at least half of them!! lol.

Lastly I'm going to try to be better about my ARCs, whether from Penguin or NetGalley. I've been pretty good with NetGalley this year, only requesting authors I'm extremely interested in. But I only read a few of them this year. And Penguin, I accept too many and then don't find the time to read them in 40 days! So less requesting.

I think you are going to be pretty busy next year...

message 12: by Lourdes (new)

Lourdes | 92 comments My reading resolution for 2018 is simply to knock down as much as I can on my "Want to Read" folder.

message 13: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I've decided I also MUST get to reading some great books on writing and improving said writing. I've been sorely lax in those areas.

I love reading everyone's goals! I'm going to post mine this weekend, I want to figure out what is realistic.

message 15: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments 1. I want to read 36 books (avg 3/month) that are not comics, children's books, or re-reads.

2. I want at least half of those to be books that were on my TBR pre-2018.

3. I want to read all of the unread digital comics I have sitting on Comixology.

4. I'm going to participate in my library's annual reading challenge again this year, but I won't know the details until their kick-off next week.

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments For those who want to read more in 2018, I found this article online:

http://beta.latimes.com/books/la-et-j...

I think there are more articles out there that offer more and different suggestions like having more than one book going at a time. (Just make sure they are different genres...)

Happy New Year!

Yes, the only way I can read multiple is if they're different genres! I can't read 2 fantasy books at the same time. lol.

message 18: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I also find I can't read two of the same author's work at once.

Well, I did constantly read 3 Kings at once in October. lol. But he's definitely got some different genres!

I gave my goals some thought this week. I have a tendancie to overcomplicate things...hahah Once of my life goals for 2018 is to simplify.

1. Read 100 books
2. Read 50/100 books from what I already own
3. Listen to audio books on my commute everyday
4. Find another 15-20 minutes each night to read or listen to a book
5. Keep up with posting books reviews
6. Participate in the Goodreads groups more often

message 21: by Drew (new)

Drew K (goodreadscomdrew_k) 1. Participate in the group for the full year - for some reason after I read a few books the week we went on vacation last July, I didn't sit down and enter them all, read a few more during the summer fell further behind in my postings, read more, had even more to post, didn't... lather, rinse and repeat.
2. Read, rate and review 75 books, starting by...
3. Completing my "bedside table challenge." Basically a Read What I own challenge, focusing on the 15 or so books currently piled up on the bedside table. One's a library book so I better keep that near the top.
4. Read one "non-North American" author a month

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments Hey guys... Trying to wrap my reading lists and goals up for the year. We have just over a month.

Am doing better than I thought I was. How are you doing on your reading goals?

message 24: by Elyse, Moderator (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 8826 comments Mod
I'm doing wayyyy better than I thought! lol. But I did read a lot of graphic novels/less than 200 page books. But also some pretty big ones! I think I upped my audiobook game too as I started listening faster this year.

I did much better with my goals this year! I had a great reading year overall, and really enjoyed my time here on Goodreads. I think my goals for 2019 will be pretty similar.

message 26: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments I am very pleased with how many books I was able to read this year. Had also hoped to knock all the books added in 2015 & 2016 my Want to Read folder. Check! Don't think I am going to be able to read 22 books that I actually own. (maybe I have time to work on that...) WAS able to read over 24 non-fiction.

message 27: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I'm still working on my overall goal for the year, but I've met all of my resolutions with time to spare!

1. I want to read 36 books (avg 3/month) that are not comics, children's books, or re-reads. DONE!

2. I want at least half of those to be books that were on my TBR pre-2018. DONE! And that's half of all books that qualify for the first category, I didn't just hit 18 and then stop counting.

3. I want to read all of the unread digital comics I have sitting on Comixology. DONE! Of course I now have another set of unread comics... but I wiped out everything I had pre-2018, and I'm currently working with a much smaller pile (well, virtual pile) than I had coming into the year.

4. I'm going to participate in my library's annual reading challenge again this year, but I won't know the details until their kick-off next week. DONE! I never came back to fill in the details or name a specific goal, but the highest tier was 100 books, so... yup, hit that one too.

That was great. I think if I didn't have "resolutions", I wouldn't have met some/most of my goals.

message 29: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments So I beat the 50 book challenge and upped it to 100, which I've nearly completed. And I'm at 27 for the RWYO Challenge this year, definitely defeating my goal of 18. I've also done a bunch of rereads, though not necessarily the ones I intended to do. And at least I did browse through some writing books.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments For 2019 I’ve pretty much figured out what I want to do.

This year I’ll make it to 100. I wanted to do that at least once, but it’s not a feasible yearly goal for me.

In 2019, I’ll have a lot of work to do on my book and I also want to catch up on tv and movies, so I’m only setting a goal of 35. I also want to reread a bunch of favorites next year so I probably won’t get a ton of new reads done but I’d like to do some.

Not sure how many RWYO books I'll do. Maybe 10?

I like the one about catching up on authors. I need to get on that one, though I've gotten a little better. I finally caught up on Gillian Flynn this year.
