Welcome Brian! whale-oiled out! I can understand, it is a one of a kinder, and perhaps you need to be in the mood for it. I LOVE that you said 'my precious' about your collection - I feel the same way even though I have run out of shelf space and some of my precious sits in totes in my basement. Which I feel bad about.

Greg welcome! You always crack me up and brighten my day even though sometimes you can be quite the sass master ;) Are you joining us for moby dick in jan? I think you are kidding about moving from florida, right?

I was there once and got of the car to take pictures of sheep and people looked at me like I was insane. So worth it though! Oh I also saw U2 and coldplay at slane castle on that trip. yeah, that dates me but it was awesome!

Agreed. Ireland is stupendously beautiful, so green, and never hot, never freezing cold, and yes, I agree with that Miss America candidate in the movies, my favorite date also is April 24th (or so).

Hi Brian, yes, I've tried to read Shakespeare all my life. Didn't care for it, especially when it was forced on me in grade school, just cause I HAD to read it . Now, I listen to it because I WANT to.

Christopher, thanks for the link! This'll be great for later today after dentist apt!!!

In the meantime, have a great New Year's Eve, and wishing everyone a very Happy 2018. xx

Hi Tanya, great to see you here! Hope you can join us for a read soon :) Best of luck with your new baby, keep us posted!!! When is the big day expected to be?

Hi Stephanie, Wonderful to have you and happy you can join us for Moby Dick!

Hi Pip, Haven't chatted with you in awhile but very glad to have you join! Check out our Feb nominations thread and see if you'd like to chime in :)

Hi, Pip. Long time no e-see.
I hope you'll rethink your decision not to participate in Moby Dick. It's well worth the time and effort.
But I also understand the tyranny of priorities.

Hello, Everyman! It has been a long time. For health reasons I've been a bit absent from GR on and off, but hoping to make more of an effort in 2018 :-)
Thank you for the encouragement, but I have genuinely tried to get into Moby Dick a couple of times, but it's not for me. (view spoiler)
Anyway - I'm sure we'll find something in the near future which we can have a good, meaty discussion about. Much love and good wishes to you and yours for 2018. X

I am currently reading the chunkster Where Tigers Are At Home by Jean-Marie Blas De Robles.
I'm looking forward to reading and interacting with this group!

I am now a political blogger (from a liberal perspective) but don't worry, I never discuss politics here nor do I care about anyone else's politics. Reading is my escape from the world I inhabit so I almost never read political books. Otherwise, I am open to reading almost any genre.
I've been a member of this group for years and have always liked it because the group reads serious books and has intelligent discussions. However, my free time is limited and I have become very picky about which books I start and if I don't like a book, I don't usually finish it. That plus the fact I have frequently fallen hopelessly behind on the group books I do read, has turned me into more of a lurker than a participant.
That said, I am up to speed on Moby Dickens and am enjoying it more than I thought I would.

I love your comment. Yes the whale has summoned us 🤗.

I would be very interested to know what you think of Darconville's Cat when you finish.

Thank you. I'm sort of reading along. I've already read it. I thought there was a discussion for February's read, including a poll, but I can't seem to find it.

Here is the poll hummingbirder:
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

I did vote! I came across the poll before, voted, and was searching for it again to see the outcome. I asked about it because I hadn't been able to find it. I will say this: I've read two of these already.

Oh now I see the tie is broken! My work is done!

Hi Ellen I realized I missed saying hello to you! I fully agree that you can't take the library out of the girl :) Hope you can join us for our next classic read!

Hi, I'm Doug. I'm an ex-Navy submariner, retired after decades in the electric utility industry. My degree is in Nuclear engineering. I love to backpack, bike, and play blues guitar. I'm a proud husband of 40 years, Dad, and Papaw to three great kids. I've been taking advantage of the free time to read all the books I've always wanted to read, and re-read my favorites.
I'd love to read Les Miserables with the group. I may be one of the few people in the world who hasn't read the book, seen the movie, the play, or even listened to the musical soundtrack. Should be fun.

For Les Miserables, I saw the recent film adaptation & thankfully remember almost nothing from it.

Hi Doug, I retired this year from DLA Land and Maritime. We bought repair parts for subs. Welcome aboard and thank you for your service.

Hello Crystal, I've never met anyone who took off a year just to read. You are the Bookworm Queen.
Biblio wrote: "Hi Doug, it's so great to learn a bit of your background!"
Same here Crystal. I really enjoy your comments in the Dostoevsky group. Takes a lot of courage to take a year off to read! I'll bet you will always be glad that you did.
Thanks to all for the welcome.

Thanks to all for the welcome.

Doug, fabulous to see you here! I haven't read the book and I am getting SO much more than the book from the show so I am sure will enjoy!

Welcome welcome Crystal! Taking a year off to read - that is my dream! Your life sounds fascinating, I lived all over the world as a child but am pretty much set in the suburbs of philly for the time being. Welcome and hope you can join us for les mis!

Yas, welcome! That is fantastic that your 2018 goal is to read big books because we are all about chunksters! I started Man without qualities earlier this year and I need to get back to it - it is very interesting and reminded me a bit of Proust. Thrilled you can join us for les mis!

I stumbled across this group and thought I'd join as I love a good long book and there are many chunksters on my list to read but I never seem to get to them as they are well, too chunky. Love the idea of having a reading schedule and a group to read along with so hopefully will get some of the big books read finally. I am going to join in reading Les Mis as I think I will be able to catch up over the coming weeks with the group. I look forward to getting to know people here.

I'm full of hot air, but not enough to play the bassoon. Good for you!

Maybe should add I just reached the part about all the killings and some of the descriptions are upsetting."
