Welcome Brian! whale-oiled out! I can understand, it is a one of a kinder, and perhaps you need to be in the mood for it. I LOVE that you said 'my precious' about your collection - I feel the same way even though I have run out of shelf space and some of my precious sits in totes in my basement. Which I feel bad about.

I was there once and got of the car to take pictures of sheep and people looked at me like I was insane. So worth it though! Oh I also saw U2 and coldplay at slane castle on that trip. yeah, that dates me but it was awesome!

Agreed. Ireland is stupendously beautiful, so green, and never hot, never freezing cold, and yes, I agree with that Miss America candidate in the movies, my favorite date also is April 24th (or so).

Hi Brian, yes, I've tried to read Shakespeare all my life. Didn't care for it, especially when it was forced on me in grade school, just cause I HAD to read it . Now, I listen to it because I WANT to.

Tanya Booklovinghippo (booklovinghippo) | 33 comments Hi I'm Tanya! I am from Canada and work as an HR Professional- more specifically in Labour Relations. I currently have one son, and one more baby on the way (due January). I love reading chunksters- you get to be submerged in the world for a lot longer than a short book. I read some of the previous reads with the group and started a lot but life always got in the way. I'm hoping this year to make the chunksters more of a priority!

Stephanie Flynn (stephanieflynn) Hello I’m Stephanie. I am a pediatrician with a busy practice. Sometimes those little people suck the life right out of me. But the hugs and watching them pretend to be me makes up for it. I’m a Disney junkie and I love my zoo (home if Fiona the hippo). I read when I can though especially in the winter months I fall asleep with my closed kindle in my hand. I’m excited to see Miby Dick as the first read for the new year. This is a book I’ve always wanted to read and I’ll do my best to keep up.

Stephanie

Pip | 2 comments Hello everyone! I'm Pip - British but living in Spain since 1993. I enjoy all kinds of literature, including thick chunky novels to lose myself in. I'm afraid I won't be participating in the Moby Dick read but look forward to mulling over future chunksters with you all.

In the meantime, have a great New Year's Eve, and wishing everyone a very Happy 2018. xx

Hi, Pip. Long time no e-see.

I hope you'll rethink your decision not to participate in Moby Dick. It's well worth the time and effort.
But I also understand the tyranny of priorities.

Hello, Everyman! It has been a long time. For health reasons I've been a bit absent from GR on and off, but hoping to make more of an effort in 2018 :-)

Thank you for the encouragement, but I have genuinely tried to get into Moby Dick a couple of times, but it's not for me. (view spoiler)

Anyway - I'm sure we'll find something in the near future which we can have a good, meaty discussion about. Much love and good wishes to you and yours for 2018. X

Cara | 4 comments Hello, I am Cara. I'm a soon to be grad student who really loves classics and Russian literature (which is probably tied to my love of chunksters haha.) I also love Murakami, and books about polar exploration.

I am currently reading the chunkster Where Tigers Are At Home by Jean-Marie Blas De Robles.

I'm looking forward to reading and interacting with this group!

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments Hi, I'm Ellen and no longer a professional librarian. However, I am very active as a volunteer for my local library. You can take the girl out of the library but you can't take the library out of the girl!

I am now a political blogger (from a liberal perspective) but don't worry, I never discuss politics here nor do I care about anyone else's politics. Reading is my escape from the world I inhabit so I almost never read political books. Otherwise, I am open to reading almost any genre.

I've been a member of this group for years and have always liked it because the group reads serious books and has intelligent discussions. However, my free time is limited and I have become very picky about which books I start and if I don't like a book, I don't usually finish it. That plus the fact I have frequently fallen hopelessly behind on the group books I do read, has turned me into more of a lurker than a participant.

That said, I am up to speed on Moby Dickens and am enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Hi, I'm Doug. I'm an ex-Navy submariner, retired after decades in the electric utility industry. My degree is in Nuclear engineering. I love to backpack, bike, and play blues guitar. I'm a proud husband of 40 years, Dad, and Papaw to three great kids. I've been taking advantage of the free time to read all the books I've always wanted to read, and re-read my favorites.

I'd love to read Les Miserables with the group. I may be one of the few people in the world who hasn't read the book, seen the movie, the play, or even listened to the musical soundtrack. Should be fun.

For Les Miserables, I saw the recent film adaptation & thankfully remember almost nothing from it.

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments I'm Crystal, I took 2017 off work to simply read books. It was a dream & a far cheaper alternative to travelling the world. I just returned to Canada from teaching in Korea for a few years where I met my husband. For reading, I try to read everything & as widely as I can. My degree is a General Arts one (Liberal Arts) which means I studied everything interesting in University but nothing practical!!

Yas, welcome! That is fantastic that your 2018 goal is to read big books because we are all about chunksters! I started Man without qualities earlier this year and I need to get back to it - it is very interesting and reminded me a bit of Proust. Thrilled you can join us for les mis!

message 90: by Renee (new)

Renee | 23 comments Hi, I'm Renee, and I'm in Canada. Someone from another group gave me the link to this one because I wanted to read Les Misérables. Since you're just starting it, I thought I would join you. There are many chunksters on my TBR that I still want to read. I have a tendency to plan more books than I have time for, so I hope I don't fall into that problem again, and am able to keep up with the group read. I'm really looking forward to it, and I like the look of the reading schedule.

message 91: by Dianne (new)

message 92: by Bron (new)

Bron (bron23) | 50 comments Hi, I'm Bron and I'm from Adelaide, Australia. I am a social worker, working part time and studying part time while raising three kidlets with my hubby.

I stumbled across this group and thought I'd join as I love a good long book and there are many chunksters on my list to read but I never seem to get to them as they are well, too chunky. Love the idea of having a reading schedule and a group to read along with so hopefully will get some of the big books read finally. I am going to join in reading Les Mis as I think I will be able to catch up over the coming weeks with the group. I look forward to getting to know people here.

message 93: by Chris (new)

Chris | 1 comments Hi all! Joining this group is my first significant goodreads activity, despite being a member for many years. I'm just finishing my first Tolstoy - Resurrection, and kind of shocked that I LOVE IT! So...thinking to read War & Peace of Anna Karenina next, but a bit intimidated (by those books, and honestly, by this group :) ) Hoping you'll help me get over my fears! xo, Chris
