ABANDONED. Fantasy short story about friendly non-human falsely accused of murder

It was set in "the real world" (i.e., not a fantasy world, or anything like that) and was about a character who was not human (I don't remember exactly what he was, but he was a "monster" of sorts, like a zombie or a troll or something) who lived in the woods near a village and was friends with everyone, but

(SPOILER ALERT)

he was blamed for a series of children's murders and a mob tried to kill him, and at the end of the story you find out that it was really one of the village boys who was kidnapping and murdering the children (I want to say the killer was the high school quarterback or something similar).

I read it in an anthology probably about 6 years ago, and don't know how old the anthology was.
