When Amanda goes into that guy's house to get evidence for the crime, did anyone found it ludicrous that she would all of a sudden ask to use his washroom/loo so she can have a moment to herself to mull over her findings? To me, that just ruined the entire story for me. Runcie seemed to go out of his way to make Amanda as this fiery, intelligent and brazen woman who would dare venture into a potentially dangerous situation in order to solve a crime and then out of nowhere, she was hit with the stupid stick so she can voluntarily lock herself into an isolated room of a known criminal? Seriously?
I understand that the story needed Amanda to be in peril, fine. But there was no freaking reason for her to suddenly use the man's washroom to mull over her findings. I suddenly felt like I was reading a badly written horror story where the damsel is being chased by the killer and stupidly runs into the basement when she could've easily ran outside. Amanda drove to that guy's place. She could've easily just rushed out into her car and sped off. If Runcie needed her to be kidnapped, he could've just had the guy grabbed her or knock her out. Not have her voluntarily become the victim.
And then the story ends off with that horrible joke about the bananas at Amanda's expense after she just suffered a near rape/kidnapping. REALLY?! I love this book but honestly, I'm starting to believe the author wanted to punish Amanda for being a brazen woman in the 50's.
