Luke (korrick) | 2004 comments Cleaned Out, Annie Ernaux, translated from French by Carol Sanders, 1974, France, NOVEL

"Twenty-year-old Denise has just had an illegal abortion and is wondering if she will die because of it...She wants to "Find out where the whole mess began. I don't believe it, I didn't hate them from birth, I didn't always hate my parents, the customers, the store...I hate the others too now, those with an education, the professors, respectable people."..."

(H.S., p. 41)

Fionnuala I haven't read Cleaned Out but it sounds like it shares some themes with another of Ernaulx's books which I have read: La Place:
"The author grieves for her dead father by assembling words on paper, words which slowly take the form of a portrait of the father from his childhood at the turn of the twentieth century, through his years as a farm labourer, as a factory worker and eventually as the proprietor of a little café cum grocery shop on the edge of a small town in Normandy...
