WHO IS YOUR HOBBIT? BILBO OR FRODO?

Who is your hobbit?
Bilbo or Frodo?
I know they are different, but which do you prefer and why.

Actually I have always felt the hero of the story is Samwise Gamgee. He stays with his friend Frodo through thick and thin, willing to sacrifice himself on multiple occasions for Frodo. He is loyal and true to himself in spite of great hardships. He was able to see through the deceptions of Gollum, and had the courage to face Shelob with just a small sword (and Galadriel's magic water). When he feels that Frodo is lost, he takes the burden on himself to finish the quest and actually resists the temptation of unlimited power. He survives intact after the ordeal, to return home and begin over again with a heart full of love and hope for the future.

Michele Rice Carpenter I also agree with Judee. Samwise Gamgee saved Frodo's life many times, which saved the day in the end. ...more

Bilbo bros. Think of it this way: Bilbo assisted in killing a dragon. Frodo just went to Mt. Doom and threw away a family heirloom into a volcano. <--- Gratitude at its finest :P

I definitely prefer Bilbo- he's not a role model, or a hero, or any kind of special person at the beginning, but over his quest he develops in unexpected and amazing ways. Even though he grows, he retains some of his original Winnie-the-Poohish personality, which is what makes him such a funny and delightful character.

Sam. Absolutely.

Of the two, Frodo is the more interesting as his burden determines the fate of the Middle Earth, but I would have to go with Sam. What loyalty!

Bilbo! much more interesting.

From the beginning Bilbo is the hobbit with the Tookish side, and he is the one who passed the ring to Frodo, also Bilbo lived through adventures and journeys but Frobo only lived the sorrow of whole middle earth which is destroying the ring... BILBO IS MORE FUN

I like them both and Frodo is a younger version of Bilbo making him to be able to act on Bilbo's wisdom.

I like Frodo

I like all five main Hobbits, but I kinda lean towards Merry and Pippin. Especially in the book. I re-read the Sam parts more carefully after seeing the movies.

Bilbo Baggins!

Bilbo! Totally Biblo! Always Biblo!

Frodo

Definitely my Hobbit is Sam! Frodo is not the hero of The lords of the rings, sorry for those who love him.

I think I prefer Bilbo as I can relate to him to a greater extent: I enjoy simple home comforts, seldom feel wanderlust, derive great pleasure from reading, and could be regarded as unsociable!

That's a good question: in the Hobbit, I start to like Bilbo a lot, but then in The Lord of the Rings I don't like him at all. I think I'd have to go with Frodo. However, Frodo is not my favorite character. My favorite character is Sam . . . by far. He is an amazing friend and stays loyal to Frodo throughout the ENTIRE story. If you ask me, Frodo would have never, ever, ever ever ever completed his task if the trustworthy Samwise Gamgee hadn't been there. Sam is definitely my favorite character!

Frodo, hands down.

The Hobbit is an interesting tale of adventure, quests and friendship. It is an English schoolboy's adventure book.

Lord of the Rings is the showdown between good and evil. Frodo shows how even the smallest piece can win a battle. How one person's goodness can affect the destiny of nations. And Frodo is a microcosm of battle scarred soldiery. He saves the Shire, indeed all of Middle Earth, and can not enjoy it. He is permanently scarred - as indeed any of us would be, holding such a burden.

Bilbo is fun, and has his charms. Frodo is an allegory for the human condition. We have much more to learn from Frodo.

I agree, Samwise Gamgee is THE hobbit par excellence. Both Bilbo and Frodo are noble and heroic characters, but they are touched by elvishness, whilst Sam is the perfect exemplar of HOBBIT virtues.

San. The entire work is about Sam. The rest are players who carry the ball on and off, but Sam is the one for whom it all takes place as he is the one left standing in his garden.

Bilbo nor Frodo, my favourite is Sam!!!

Bilbo! I like Frodo too though. I'd rather go with Pippin though if that counts.

While I like Bilbo a bit better, I must say that too many people judge Frodo as the movie character rather than the book character.

In the movie Frodo gets stabbed by a ring wraith whilst fleeing, in the book he gets stabbed trying to protect his friends, for example.

I loved the movies, but I think they made him a little weaker than he should have been. Not to undermine Sam's help, of course, without him Frodo would have never made it to Mordor.

Out of the two mentioned; Bilbo has to be my favorite hobbit because, without him, Frodo would have never had his adventures or been as important to the Lord of the Rings.
But my all time favorite hobbit(s) are Merry and Pippin. They are very fun loving and oblivious and I love that about them.

Bilbo will always be my Hobbit

Biblo.

In the third lord of the rings frodo is driven insane by the ring right before the ring was destroyed. Biblo didn't go insane

Between Bilbo and Frodo ,i definitely like Frodo better.Frodo goes through much more pain and sorrow than Bilbo does.Carrying the ring into Mordor requires much more sacrifice and courage than being a burglar.Bilbo is a funny, lovable character, but Frodo's sorrow really tugs at my heartstrings. The Hobbit, anyway is a charming children's book, but the Lord of the Rings is much more realistic, dark and grand.

Bilbo...Don't like Frodo.

I like this question; it makes me want to read all four books again. I'd have to say Bilbo, just 'cause I'd love to visit Bilbo's house, make smoke rings, and enjoy some mead and sweetmeats while he tells me about his adventures.

Totally Bilbo the burglar!!!

Gonna echo others of this thread:

Samwise. He's the heart of Hobbiton. And certainly the hobbit that Tolkien himself related to the most.

Well, it's got to be Bilbo (at least for me.) 'The Hobbit,' was the first of JRRT that I read: an introduction to the Hobbit as an entity. Frodo didn't turn up until 'The Lord of the Rings,' If you havn't read The Hobbit you don't have a chance of getting your head around Lord of The Rings: So; it's Bilbo for me.

its hard to choose only one but bilbo is better.

I am 50 and I see much of both in myself.
Bilbo wanted adventure wile Frodo had it thrust upon him. Frodo said, "I do not want this but it is mine to carry, mine!"
Truth be told I see more Argon in me. I can fight defend stand strong as long as you do not ask me to to be the one caring the burden itself. I will help as long as you will let me but I fear I am not strong enough to do it myself.

I have to agree with Judee on this one: Sam.

Don't get me wrong, Frodo and Bilbo are both good characters. It's only that Sam is the beacon of hope in Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo. Because he started the whole story, he found the ring, he took Frodo and told him his adventures, preparing him mentaly for his own journey.

I enjoy Bilbo's complexity. Frodo, Sam and the rest of the gang are all selfless and kind at heart, while Bilbo is more cunning and self-serving. He isn't evil, of course, but a bit less noble than the rest of them.

Another vote for Sam.

I've always thought that Hobbits in the Hobbit were meant as metaphors for young children. They like their creature comforts, interact with grown-ups and go on adventures with older children (aka the dwarves). Bilbo is a wide-eyed innocent in a dangerous world - a metaphorical 12 year old.

By the time we get to the Lord of the Rings, the metaphor has changed a little. Hobbits are not just children figures. They now fight, fall in love, have children of their own. If anything, the Hobbits become everyman symbols. It is almost as if the Hobbits of LOTR are the only civilians in a world a war, perhaps echoing Tolkien's experience of WW2.

The bit that jars a little for me is that Frodo, like several other characters, has a clear destiny. He is a ring-bearer which means that he doesn't get much of a choice as the story chugs through weathertop, fellowship, mount Doom, eagles, boats, the end. We know he is going to succeed in destroying the ring, just as we know that it's not going to end well.

Sam hasn't got a destiny or a magic doohickey to see him through the story. His courage has to be home-grown. That makes him less of an Arthurian hero and more of a modern hero.

I prefer Frodo because of the melancholy bent he displays. He feels deeply and isn't afraid to ask for help. And there's the great friendship with Sam...

Gollum... bit left field but always fascinated by him as a nipper

well, I've had the pleasure of"knowing" (lol) Frodo a lot longer so I guess I'm gonna say him, though I do love Bilbo as well.

Although, I have a lot of love for all of the main hobbits - Sam (definitely), Merry and Pippin too. I just love hobbits.

Sam

Sam has always been my favorite, :).

Pippin is my favorite

Oh please. Sam is my hobbit.

Bilbo all the way! *-*

I would have to say that when I think of a hobbit, Bilbo definitely is the one that comes to mind first.

Bilbo!

I have always enjoyed Frodo over Bilbo, but I think my favorite hobbit was Merry. Not as tragic as Frodo, nor as simple as Sam, and also not as immature as Pippin, Merry was the one who looked at maps in Rivendell, and saved Eowyn (my girl) from the Nazgul. Altogether the kind of bloke I would enjoy having an ale with!

Samwise Gamgee

I didn't read the books yet but, after watching the movies I think Sam is my hobbit. I don't know what would have happened if Sam carried the ring from the start.
