in recent weeks i made the resolution to stop being embarrassed of the things i like. to unlearn the societal standards which have told me to be ashamed of things i love since before i could even see if i actually liked them or not. things that i know i don't need to hide anymore, because i've finally found friends who accept all of me, and even share interests with me.
on november 11, at lunch, my friend asked another person there if he'd caught up with haikyuu!! yet. i said that i liked it, too, and when he asked me if i was caught up with the anime, all that i could say was, "uh, i watched the first two seasons." when he asked if i had a favorite character, i said, "the libero from the main team." i've become so used to having to play down my knowledge to try to not be the weird girl that i don't even know how to talk about it. i wanted to say things, but they couldn't come out, even when i tried to force it. things like that i read the manga avidly for two years, or that i know the name of every member of every team, not to mention their positions, as well as the team mascots. that i could tell you the order of the matches and what happened in each. it made me sad, and i told myself that this was my mid-year resolution.
since then:
- over thanksgiving i told my sister that i liked super junior, because i've finally let myself like things even when i know they're flawed, and showed her the songs i liked. (she liked them, too.)
- i was able to make a new friend after she asked which kpop groups i liked, and i answered honestly this time. i'd not met anyone before who also liked btob and infinite, and she's my first friend who has.
- after i admitted that my driving playlist wasn't my normal music, it was the music i thought other people would want to listen to when they ride in my car, i told my friend that the music i normally listen to is ballads, especially rock ballads. as it turns out, he loves ballads too, and the only korean singer he'll listen to is a ballad singer, and his favorite music is soft rock. he said he'd look up the ones i had suggested, and the next day when we hung out, i played my normal playlist in the car.
- when my friends mentioned haikyuu!! again, i was able to talk about it. not as much as i wanted to, but more than i could before.
- i admitted to playing llsif, and it turns out that i'm not the only one who plays snow halation year-round.
unlearning to hate who i am and what i love is a hard path... but i think i've finally started facing forwards instead of backwards.

He’s got an amazing voice, has great performance, is humble, sings ballads, is handsome, and most importantly has already served military service so I will never have to worry about him shaving his head... what more reason do I need to stan
