Zahraa Raafat (zahraaraafat) Life is all we know, and yet it remains the most unfathomable thing to most. Life is nothing on it's own ; it's defined by what we make of it. that's all I can think of right now. sorry, if it doesn't make sense ,or if it sounds cheesy.

Douglas Adams!

(It's from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.)

Agree Lance ....But I would also envoke Harry's 10TH commandment. Try also 'not to be a dick'. This will give me peace of mind while I drink my beer.

You're onto it. I was tempted to add "a hot woman" after "a cold beer" but thought that may make me look a bit shallow so I'll stick with "a good book".

P.S. Not sure if this is the way James thought the discussion would go when he set up the thread. Perhaps Harry can put us back on track...

life is different for different species I guess..... for other species it's mostly food and reproduction.... but for us it's something else too

Courtesy of Douglas Adams, we know the answer is 42... but we still don't know what the question is. ;)

As long as it's not a cold woman and a hot beer.

Now that is shallow, Harry! Please mate, this is a serious discussion...

message 18: by Lance, Group Founder (new)

Lance Morcan | 3058 comments Humour (?) aside, I think "it's defined by what we make of it" has to be the best response yet. Thanks زهراء . I can't better that.

Zahraa Raafat (zahraaraafat) Oh, thanks. I didn't see that coming :D

message 20: by Ray (last edited Dec 09, 2017 07:34PM) (new)

Ray Gardener Life is the experience. Is the experience meaningful? Was it worth it for the universe to spend so much time and energy so that one could taste ice cream, feel an orgasm, savor a victory, contemplate the heavens in awe, and a million other things good and bad? And to think, there is likely far more to come as we evolve.

One could live staying indoors all one's life. But would that be life? No, whatever meaning it has -- whether we can make sense of it or not -- requires embracing the journey. Let us go forth then, my friends, and find the meaning together.

After a lifetime of contemplation and everyday problems of living, the only thing that makes sense to me is that life, as we know it, is a learning experience designed to improve ourselves from our past life.

This fits with the spiritual belief in the cycle of life and death. The only way we will be capable of reaching a state of Nirvana is through spiritual perfection. Then there will be no purpose in being re-born and we will join with the ever expanding Universe (or God).

If you believe in duality then Satan is the negative side of God. There is only one supreme being. Duality: black/white, light/dark; good/bad; true/false etc etc. every positive has a negative. We were given free will to choose our own path. The learning experiences during life can test the best souls. I am not saying my opinion is correct, just that I have not heard a more convincing answer,

message 25: by Thieryn (last edited Oct 24, 2018 04:07PM) (new)

Thieryn I don't believe there is a "meaning" to life. However, there is much to a meaningful life. For me, it would be those moments of self-reflection, throughout my life, peaking at the few moments I have left as an existence on by deathbed, thinking back upon my (hopefully many) years, and having as few regrets as possible. That is what makes me feel meaningful as a human person, and gives my life meaning.

That's an issue with the settings of your Goodreads account, not specifically this group. Try going into account settings and you'll be able to change whether you get notifications on site as opposed to via email, or you'll even be able to select no notifications at all.

Ray Gardener To play with cats, obviously.

Lance Morcan | 3058 comments I've yet to see anything that beats blue skies, holidays, cold beer and a good book.

C'mon guys! Dig deep. There's gotta be something more meaningful than that... (But if there ain't it's still good enuff for me).

Alan Fuller | 6 comments “The world has been created for this purpose, that we may be born; we are born for this end, that we may acknowledge the Maker of the world and of ourselves—God; we acknowledge Him for this end, that we may worship Him; we worship Him for this end, that we may receive immortality as the reward of our labours, since the worship of God consists of the greatest labours; for this end we are rewarded with immortality, that being made like to the angels, we may serve the Supreme Father and Lord for ever, and may be to all eternity a kingdom to God. This is the sum of all things, this the secret of God, this the mystery of the world, from which they are estranged, who, following present gratification, have devoted themselves to the pursuit of earthly and frail goods, and by means of deadly enjoyments have sunk as it were in mire and mud their souls, which were born for heavenly pursuits. Lactantius, Divine Institutes, Chap. VI”

J. Gowin | 136 comments We come into this world screaming and covered in bood. Often, we leave this world screaming and covered in blood. In between there is pain. Like children we look up and ask, "why?" The prophets and their made up gods never fail to sell us their answers at the cost of everything.

Whatever drives you forward, that is the meaning of your life. Go live it.

message 31: by Alan (new)

Alan Fuller | 6 comments Here is another quote from my page for you.
“To sum up: it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence. If a man, holding a belief which he was taught in childhood or persuaded of afterwards, keeps down and pushes away any doubts which arise about it in his mind, purposely avoids the reading of books and the company of men that call into question or
discuss it, and regards as impious those questions which cannot easily be asked without disturbing it—the life of that man is one long sin against mankind.”
