ABANDONED. Short fantasy story about boy who doesn't know he was a prince

Would have read this in the 90s or 2000s and I think it may have been in a collection of short stories (fantasy/sci fi perhaps?). It may have been an Australian collection.

The story is about a young boy who is raised by poor parents. He has an ordinary upbringing but they never strike or hit him. It turns out that he was a prince who had been given to these people to raise to teach him humility.

He eventually realises this and goes to claim his destiny. I remember an image of a snow covered wooden house or barn and him leaving on a horse at night. The last bit may have been from the point of view of a palace official, saying "Tell them, the prince is on his way."
