Heather | 8548 comments One more month! I'm almost positive that the majority of the members will finish at least one if not more books just in this month.

For me, I've started reading two certain books this year that I voluntarily didn't finish because I didn't find them interesting enough. Does that take away from my time to read other, more interesting books? I don't know.

But, as I said in the last thread, I'm behind on my challenge and feel so behind in this group! I'm sorry, my fellow art lovers!

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments For December, I am re-reading Van Gogh And Gauguin Electric Arguments And Utopian Dreams by Bradley Collins

I read it years ago, but, having recently watched (and loved) the movie 'Loving Vincent' I felt I needed to re-read it.

Really enjoying it, getting more out of it than last time, because, the internet! There are some plates in the book, but not many and all black and white. The author is describing the artists lives, inner feelings and artistic journeys through their artwork, so it is a magnificent boon to be able to google each image as he describes them and examine them in colour while reading.

It does make it a slow read, but well worth it.

That looks like a great book! I admit I didn't know of this one. Thank you for introducing it in addition to your comments, Deborah!

I am finding it fascinating this time around; I have google open in front of me and look at the images while I am reading. It really enhances the book a great deal. Would recommend.

That is a great idea to look at the images of which it is writing!

It makes it so much more vivid! I always thought I knew a bit about Gauguin, but he was much, much more versatile than I knew. Plus, it is a psychological evaluation of the paintings, so it goes into more detail than you would ever remember.

I love psychology, reading it with art is a real treasure! I'm more than fascinated and eager to read it soon!

If you are so inclined, I would love to know more about what you are learning about the different works! There is a thread Psychology of Art https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... where maybe some points that you have learned could be added. I know I would be intrigued!

Heather | 8548 comments Thank you, Deborah!

Alright everyone, three days left of this month and this year! How are we doing?

Is anyone scrambling to finish a book in the next three days like I am? I'm not really sticking closely to my self-challenge as I have not met my goal, but I came close!

I know there are several of us who have surpassed their challenge a long time ago and to you I say Bravo! And some of us are not interested in a challenge for various reasons, and that is completely okay! Then there are those of us who chose not to participate or even post any comments, that is just fine, too!

Since I am so close to meeting my goal, I would like to finish my current book. But the season of the year is still causing a bit of interruption in my reading time. Not that this is any sort of excuse.

This will be my last post until the last day of the month, the last day of the year!

I would like to pose a question: Does anyone want me to create a new challenge thread for you to make another self-challenge for the year 2018? If yes, you may just say "yes" here in this thread, if not, please explain your reasoning so I may better understand more of the thought processes of people in the group. In fact, does anyone have feelings about me creating another poll on this very subject? I might just do that depending on how many responses I get to this question in this thread.

Has this challenge helped anyone tend to read more? Or has this challenge not affected your reading at all?

Another interesting question of which I am curious: How many art books have you read in this last year? You do not have to answer this, it is just to satisfy my own personal curiosity.
As for me, I haven't read any art books this year. And I am somewhat ashamed of that, especially being the moderator of this art group. I do challenge myself for the upcoming year to acquaint myself more with art. Maybe I could add a bit more to the discussions!

I will be back on December 31 to see what has been posted.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments I have read 32 book, relating, more or less, to Art. That was intentionally boosting my art-reading profile.

Just racing to finish my last one for the year; Mona Lisa The History of the World’s Most Famous Painting by Donald Sassoon

This challenge fitted in with a personal challenge I was engrossed in.

Did you get it, Deborah? Is it finished?
I'm betting you are an ambitious person and it's read and reviewed by now!

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments Ha! Yes it is finished and reviewed, while I really liked the wealth of information and the width and breadth of the research, it was NOT by any means an easy book to read. If you are fluent in French, it might be a little easier.

It is not that I am an ambitious person, actually I am pretty lazy in most ways, but I do love my reading!

Heather | 8548 comments Fascinating review, Deborah and well written! I really liked your positive and negative views of the writing of book itself. Like I said above, I received The History of the World's most Famous Painting and after reading your review, I'm going to begin reading my book today. I'm interested, also, in the subject. I wonder if Donald Sassoon, the author, delves into some of the subjects in your book. I'm eager to know.

Thank you for your review!
