Most readers would agree that Samuel Tate, Emma Garnet's father, is a monstrous, despicable character. But in what ways is he directly (if unintentionally) responsible for making her the woman she becomes? Do you think he or his wife, Alice, has a stronger impact on Emma Garnet's character? What has she learned from observing Clarice? How does her husband, Quincy Lowell, help Emma Garnet come to terms with the traumas of her childhood?
