Matt, I rewrote your header to give you an idea of how to pack some details in it (but obviously not every last one). There usually isn't enough space to get every last detail in, but it will help people who are searching for your book if you have at least 2-3 in there.
When did you read it or when was it published? Author female or male? Remember the cover?

Perhaps Ice Station? Ice Station does feature a warship from another country (I think it was either France or Britain). I don't specifically remember a giant sphere, but there was a sophisticated plane buried deep in the ice. Set in Antarctica, not the Arctic.
Ice Hunt maybe? I haven't read it.

ice station/hunt were not it
Haven't read it so I can't say how well it fits but perhaps take a look at The Ice Limit I'd say Douglas Preston writes the same sort of thrillers as Crichton and such so it might be a candidate.

Matt, roughly around what year did you read this book? I find "several years" means different things in this large group.
Any other keywords besides "sphere" come to mind? Can you tell us more about its appearance (e.g., color, metal, height, weight)?
What about the main character (e.g., gender, job, skills/interests, personality)?
What's the time period of the story?

Considered solved, should be Ice Limit by the D Preston & L Child, link in Msg #6, confirmed in Msg #7 by OP.

Also, there is a sequel which I have yet to read, so I cannot say wether it is any good or not.

where a giant sphere is found on some arctic island. The main character is hired to go down and load it onto a ship and bring it back to the states. There is also some other country that is interested in it and send a warship. would equate this book along the lines of crichton, allen (meg books), etc
