The Members' Tasks Challenge - 2018 Tasks
I was born in 1966. My challenge will be to read a book that fits one of the following criteria: A book with "6" (six) in the title.
or
A book set in 1966.
or
A book published in 1966.
My interest in serial killers led me to write to a few of them my task would be to read a book about a serial killer or true crime.
Well I have red hair, which not many people do. My suggestion would be to read a book where the main character has red hair or the author has red hair.
I converted to Islam in my early 20s, and it's been a lot of fun reading other women's stories about their journey through the religion. The genre has really grown over the last five years, and now there are quite a few fiction and nonfiction books to chose from. My task is: Read a book about a Muslim woman.
What a great idea!I've had a think and this is what I've come up with: my name was popular in the 1990s (maybe because a variant of my name, Rachel, appeared as a character in Friends?) and I was also born in the 1990s so we could read a book published between 1990 and 1999
I was born in the Dominican Republic so my challenge is to read one book that fit one of these criteria:- A book with a Hispanic main character
or
- A book written by a Hispanic author
or
- A book set in a Latin America.

So read a book that has an Hispanic author or has an character/setting.
I've had a heart transplant so my challenge would be
Read a book about surgery or the history of medicine.
Read a book about surgery or the history of medicine.
I love reading (obviously!) so here's the task I have in mind.Read a book recommended by a friend or family member.
Kristin wrote: "Ilona, I hope it isn't too late, but I changed my task (msg 7). If it is, I'll switch it back."That's alright :)
My wife and I lost both of our mothers within a couple months of one another this year. Both lived long and full lives. Mom was in her mid 90s, Mom-in-law was in her 80s. Both lived through most of the tumultuous 20th century. My personal challenge is to read two books (I hope that's OK!) - one for each of our moms, either fiction or historical fiction and taking place anywhere from the depression through WW II.
Rique wrote: "My wife and I lost both of our mothers within a couple months of one another this year. Both lived long and full lives. Mom was in her mid 90s, Mom-in-law was in her 80s. Both lived through most of..."Hi Rique, I am so sorry to hear that, and I really like your task
Unfortunately, we set as a rule only one book per challenge member, would you be okay with Read a book, fiction or historical fiction, taking place anywhere from the great depression through WWII (1929-1945).? Feel free to change your entry if you want.
My task: I lived in three different countries (Netherlands, UK and New Zealand)My task is to read a novel (total of three therefore) by either an author from one of those three countries or set in it.
I am from Scotland and now live in the Netherlands. I studied French and German. My task is read a book which has been translated from another language.
When I was young, I loved writing and receiving letters and collecting stamps from all over the world. I had many international pen pals over the years, and I lament the fading art of letter writing.Inspired by this early interest, I've developed a love for epistolary fiction - books that are written as a series of documents - traditionally letters or diary/journal entries but now also sources such as newspaper articles/clippings, emails, text messages, blog posts - even transcribed audio recordings. I find them hard to resist!
My task: Read a work of epistolary fiction.
I want to be an art teacher someday so...Read a book where the main character enjoys creating art
OR
Read a book where the main character is a teacher
I have just been to the annual office Christmas party, so I’m thinking my task could be: read a book where there is some kind of party or someone drinks too much alcohol :-D
Ilona wrote: "we set as a rule only one book per challenge member, would you be okay with Read a book, fiction or historical fiction, taking place anywhere from the great depression through WWII (1929-1945).?."Well of course - and thanks for letting me know. All good!
I am a southern, black woman.-Read a book by an African American author
- Read a book with an African American character
- Read a book set in the South
Mie wrote: "I have just been to the annual office Christmas party, so I’m thinking my task could be: read a book where there is some kind of party or someone drinks too much alcohol :-D"Mie, I am gonna leave the second part out, we are a group for all ages ;)
Mie wrote: "I have just been to the annual office Christmas party, so I’m thinking my task could be: read a book where there is some kind of party or someone drinks too much alcohol :-D"Hahahaha! Awesome task!!!
As any man who was a teenager in 1960s America can easily relate to, was the concern over the draft and the Viet Nam War. I was a bit too young (I enlisted just as the war was ending) but my brother was not. He was drafted and sent to Plieku where he got to participate in the Tet Offensive. So, my challenge is to read a book about the Viet Nam War or about conscription.
I'm always trying to pester a certain friend to read/discuss books with me, but it's like pulling teeth. My task is to read a book with a friend, or participate in a buddy read.
As a decades old first-generation citizen, my task is to read a book about living in the intersection of 2 or more cultures (non/fiction).
I like to read book set in places I've actually visited. It's nice to be able to relate real-world visuals to an authors word-picture. My task would be: read a book set somewhere you have visited or lived.Update:
I read As Deep as the Ocean set in Paihai in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. My husband and I stayed in Russell and took the ferry across to stroll through Paihai during our visit. So neat to be able to picture the exact spot the story is set.
I am a genealogist - so I challenge everyone to read a story about searching or the search for family history or discovering your past.
I am from Romania so my task would be to read a book that fits one of these criterias:- a book by a Romanian author (for example: Herta Müller - nobel prize winner in literature 2009, Norman Manea, Mircea Cartarescu, Dan Lungu, Filip Florian)
- a book about Romania's: culture, cuisine, history, nature, mythology etc.
- a book about an important/famous romanian: athlet, inventor, scientist, musicians, composer, producer, actors, painters, leader etc.
Woo, together we have made the first 25 tasks of this challenge. Let's add some more! Tasks can be submitted until New Years Eve :)
I am sitting here reading Under the Dome, that being said my task is Read a book that intimidates you or the biggest book on your TBR Pile
I am an Indian. And I like a tough challenge ;)So my task - read a book written in a language that appears on the Indian currency, other than English. (Obviously, read a translation if you don't speak/read any of those languages).*
The author need not be Indian. For example, Bengali is one of the languages that appears on the currency, and there are a lot of Bengali books written by authors from Bangladesh. Perfectly fine to choose one of them.
* Our currency notes have the denomination written in 17 different languages, including English. A quick Google should get you a list.
I love to watch ghost shows on TV like Paranormal witness and A haunting. Read a book with ghosts in it or read a horror book.
Hemangini wrote: "My task would be to read a book where a writer/author is involved as the main protagonist."How does that connect to you, Hemangini? Are you a writer?
My favorite thing about reading a good book is the escapism factor, I can go anywhere or live any adventure to escape the monotony of life. My task would be to read a book where the main character gets transported to a different time or place.
I am second generation Scotch/Irish and finally was able this summer to visit Ireland for the first time in my life. One week was barely enough time to see Dublin and Belfast. Next trip the country-side! My task is to read a book by an Irish writer.
Almost three years ago I decided to turn my life upside down and went back to school to get an occupation in a field I never ever thought I would like. Next May (fingers crossed) I will be a radiographer and I've loved everything about it so far.As a radiographer in Finland I could work at a radiologoy department be taking x-rays, CT-scans, MRIs etc. I could also work at a cancer treatment facility and give radiotherapy to heal and help people with cancer among other things... such as radioactive isotopes. I'm totally fascinated by the isotopes and how they work in healthcare
Physics is obviously a big part of my occupation. Even more specifically quantum physics and nuclear physics. Yeah... I know... Phew... It took me a while to understand any of it. I still don't understand even the half of it but I've learned so much and I've began to love physics. This leads to the task I've chosen for you:
Read a book about quantum physics or about nuclear physics.
The genre doesn't matter so if you want to read a non-fiction book that actually explains these things, just go for it! You might enjoy it.
Ok, so let's see if I got this right: My dominant language is Dutch seeing I was born and raised in the Netherlands. However, both my parents are Portuguese and the first language I was exposed to (up and until going to school at 4 years of age) was Portuguese; this is also known as the mother language/mother tongue. I would love to be able to speak, write AND read as well in Portuguese as I can in Dutch. Practice makes perfect or so they say, so my task will be:
Read a book in your mother language/tongue.
For me this will be: A Vida, Uma Viagem de Malas Feitas by Marta Cabeza

You got it right, thank you :)
Jennifer wrote: "Well I have red hair, which not many people do. My suggestion would be to read a book where the main character has red hair or the author has red hair."As a fellow red head, I must say this is an excellent idea!
This is such a unique and fantastic idea. I love seeing what everyone has come up with already. I have identical twin girls so my task is-
Read a book featuring a main character(s) who is an identical twin
Gretchen wrote: "This is such a unique and fantastic idea. I love seeing what everyone has come up with already. I have identical twin girls..."
Cool! :)
I was born & raised in Hawaii -- I live there still. Read a book set in Hawaii OR on a tropical island.
Hi! A bit of a random question but I love planning my challenges! Can we start researching books for the prompts already listed so that when 2018 starts, we're not all rushing to find books that fit the prompts or should we wait until you publish the full list?
