Ilona | 4698 comments THE MEMBERS’ TASKS CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 - December 31, 2018

This challenge is all about YOU, the wonderful members of our group. Each of you makes your own task, and together we will create a challenge. When creating a task, think of something that relates to you. For example your name, your favorite book or your country.

Rules:
One task per member, and each task should require no more than one book to be read. We'll have as many tasks as we have submissions.
The tasks can be submitted until December 31, 2017 and the final challenge will be published on January 1, 2018.

Submit your tasks in this thread. We will work with you to make sure the task is clearly worded.

Example:
Ilona's Task: Ilona is a Hungarian female given name, the traditional name of the Queen of the Fairies in Magyar folklore. Read a book about fairy folklore.

message 5: by Kadijah Michelle (last edited Dec 01, 2017 10:59AM) (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I converted to Islam in my early 20s, and it's been a lot of fun reading other women's stories about their journey through the religion. The genre has really grown over the last five years, and now there are quite a few fiction and nonfiction books to chose from. My task is: Read a book about a Muslim woman.

message 6: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4735 comments What a great idea!
I've had a think and this is what I've come up with: my name was popular in the 1990s (maybe because a variant of my name, Rachel, appeared as a character in Friends?) and I was also born in the 1990s so we could read a book published between 1990 and 1999

message 7: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments These are all great! :)

message 14: by Rique (new)

Rique Santiestevan | 51 comments My wife and I lost both of our mothers within a couple months of one another this year. Both lived long and full lives. Mom was in her mid 90s, Mom-in-law was in her 80s. Both lived through most of the tumultuous 20th century. My personal challenge is to read two books (I hope that's OK!) - one for each of our moms, either fiction or historical fiction and taking place anywhere from the depression through WW II.

message 15: by Bo (new)

Hi Rique, I am so sorry to hear that, and I really like your task

message 19: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) | 996 comments When I was young, I loved writing and receiving letters and collecting stamps from all over the world. I had many international pen pals over the years, and I lament the fading art of letter writing.

Inspired by this early interest, I've developed a love for epistolary fiction - books that are written as a series of documents - traditionally letters or diary/journal entries but now also sources such as newspaper articles/clippings, emails, text messages, blog posts - even transcribed audio recordings. I find them hard to resist!

My task: Read a work of epistolary fiction.

message 26: by Greg (new)

Greg (lupercross) | 2250 comments As any man who was a teenager in 1960s America can easily relate to, was the concern over the draft and the Viet Nam War. I was a bit too young (I enlisted just as the war was ending) but my brother was not. He was drafted and sent to Plieku where he got to participate in the Tet Offensive.

So, my challenge is to read a book about the Viet Nam War or about conscription.

message 29: by Laura (last edited Jul 11, 2018 03:05PM) (new)

Laura | 263 comments I like to read book set in places I've actually visited. It's nice to be able to relate real-world visuals to an authors word-picture. My task would be: read a book set somewhere you have visited or lived.

Update:
I read As Deep as the Ocean set in Paihai in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. My husband and I stayed in Russell and took the ferry across to stroll through Paihai during our visit. So neat to be able to picture the exact spot the story is set.

message 36: by Boipoka (last edited Dec 08, 2017 11:02AM) (new)

Boipoka (aparajir) I am an Indian. And I like a tough challenge ;)

So my task - read a book written in a language that appears on the Indian currency, other than English. (Obviously, read a translation if you don't speak/read any of those languages).*

The author need not be Indian. For example, Bengali is one of the languages that appears on the currency, and there are a lot of Bengali books written by authors from Bangladesh. Perfectly fine to choose one of them.

* Our currency notes have the denomination written in 17 different languages, including English. A quick Google should get you a list.

How does that connect to you, Hemangini? Are you a writer?

message 40: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nikki_framke) | 276 comments My favorite thing about reading a good book is the escapism factor, I can go anywhere or live any adventure to escape the monotony of life. My task would be to read a book where the main character gets transported to a different time or place.

message 41: by GailW (last edited Dec 12, 2017 07:50PM) (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 1112 comments I am second generation Scotch/Irish and finally was able this summer to visit Ireland for the first time in my life. One week was barely enough time to see Dublin and Belfast. Next trip the country-side! My task is to read a book by an Irish writer.

message 42: by Inkeri (last edited Dec 13, 2017 12:17AM) (new)

Inkeri | 118 comments Almost three years ago I decided to turn my life upside down and went back to school to get an occupation in a field I never ever thought I would like. Next May (fingers crossed) I will be a radiographer and I've loved everything about it so far.

As a radiographer in Finland I could work at a radiologoy department be taking x-rays, CT-scans, MRIs etc. I could also work at a cancer treatment facility and give radiotherapy to heal and help people with cancer among other things... such as radioactive isotopes. I'm totally fascinated by the isotopes and how they work in healthcare

Physics is obviously a big part of my occupation. Even more specifically quantum physics and nuclear physics. Yeah... I know... Phew... It took me a while to understand any of it. I still don't understand even the half of it but I've learned so much and I've began to love physics. This leads to the task I've chosen for you:

Read a book about quantum physics or about nuclear physics.

The genre doesn't matter so if you want to read a non-fiction book that actually explains these things, just go for it! You might enjoy it.

message 43: by Susy (last edited Dec 20, 2017 01:47PM) (new)

Susy (susysstories) Ok, so let's see if I got this right:

My dominant language is Dutch seeing I was born and raised in the Netherlands. However, both my parents are Portuguese and the first language I was exposed to (up and until going to school at 4 years of age) was Portuguese; this is also known as the mother language/mother tongue. I would love to be able to speak, write AND read as well in Portuguese as I can in Dutch. Practice makes perfect or so they say, so my task will be:

Read a book in your mother language/tongue.

For me this will be: A Vida, Uma Viagem de Malas Feitas by Marta Cabeza

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! A bit of a random question but I love planning my challenges! Can we start researching books for the prompts already listed so that when 2018 starts, we're not all rushing to find books that fit the prompts or should we wait until you publish the full list?

message 50: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 1465 comments I found out a couple of years ago that one of my best friends is bipolar and I've been trying to read books related to bipolar disorder to better understand her. My task would be to read a book about mental illness.
