Another planned outage tonight. See below:
“Hi everyone! Just a quick heads up that we are planning a little bit of downtime tonight for some important back-end maintenance. It will start at 8 p.m. Pacific time aka Goodreads Standard Time, and we hope it will be short (less than an hour).
Our apologies for any inconvenience! We'll do our best to make it quick so that you can get back onto the site as soon as possible. As always, let us know if you run into any issues. ”

If you haven’t noticed, there’s a GR bug that adds a second read when you use the progress update from the home page to change your book status from “currently reading” to “read.” You’ll need to fill in your read date, too as it’s not automatically doing so. Then you’ll need to delete the second line of information below the one you just completed. Even though the data fields are empty, it’s still showing it as two reads.
This has been going on for a few days so you should go to your My Books and review the books you’ve recently completed.

FYI, we are unable to edit messages on the site. I contacted Goodreads support and they’re aware of the issue and are working on it.
This affects things like your challenges that you may try to update. Currently, when you edit and save, you’ll receive a message that there was a problem saving your edit.

Thanks Jonetta, I experienced this issue last night. I thought it might be an problem with my internet connection, glad it's not just me!
Looks like the notification system is temporarily disabled. Here’s the message (thanks, Anita):
Email, in-app, and phone push notifications temporarily disabled
Hi everyone,
Goodreads has temporarily turned off email notifications, in-app notifications, and push notifications to your phone. These notifications include when you receive a new message from a Goodreads member, new friend additions, new followers, new group additions, and any other event, comment, or activity notifications you've signed up to receive in your Account Settings. We're working on bringing these back soon.
We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and will provide updates right here on Goodreads Help on when we’ll reinstate these notifications, so please check back for more information.

For me personally, on the discussions page, the info there is still accurate (where it says in red "x-amount new" and "last updated x-amount of hours/mins ago") so at least we can still go there to see if there are new discussions in groups/topics we are following.
Privacy Settings
We just learned that Goodreads changed everyone’s privacy setting so that you’ll only receive private messages from friends. To change that back to where you can allow anyone to send you a private message, you will need to edit your profile. The option is in the “Settings” section.

(FYI, if you don't change the settings, you will not receive broadcast messages or the newsletter from us unless we are friends.)
Goodreads is removing multiple features. Here’s a summary of the announcement and a link to the details.
“ As part of our dedication to improving Goodreads, we are phasing out a number of features in order to focus on the ones our members use most, and continue to improve the overall Goodreads experience. As of July 5, 2022, Goodreads will no longer support the ability to create new content for the book reviews recommendations/recommenders section, favorite authors list, creative writing, the condition and details about owned books, friend stories, trivia, quizzes, and adding photos to books. These features will no longer be available on the site on Sept. 1, 2022.”

I thought I'd do a bunch of trivia before it was gone and I'm going to blame my depression because I absolutely sucked at it - didn't even get one answer correct - and usually I'm a good C+/B- trivia test taker.
Here’s a link to a Goodreads announcement about notifications. It really isn’t very clear.

Thanks for making me aware of Notification problems a few days ago. I was able to go to Manage Notifications while it still existed and get rid of outdated ones before Manage disappeared.
FYI, looks like GR has shut off the group notifications. You’ll have to check in with the groups to see any activity. Hope this is temporary.

Log out of Goodreads on all devices at same time then log in again. This usually fixes last active date and you should soon start getting notifications again.

Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the update.
Wow, some big changes, specifically with regards to messaging, coming in the next few weeks from the GR team:
"Hello Goodreads Member,
In the coming weeks, we will be making some updates to how messaging works on Goodreads.
What's Changing?
• Direct messages between individual members will no longer be available
• Images and external links will no longer be supported in messages
While direct messages between individual members are no longer available, you can still access your past messages from your inbox, Group moderators can still send broadcast messages to their group members, and you can still send group invitations to your Goodreads friends. All other public interactions, such as writing and responding to book reviews, remains unchanged.
-The Goodreads Team"
We're not sure how newsletters will be affected within the broadcast, how links to spreadsheets, and the loss of images will be significant. MODs welcome your thoughts and appreciate your patience as things develop.

my comment on Reddit about this was that it was likely one of the most asinine decisions they've made and i've been on the platform for close to 15 years
It just seems like a lazy decision. I'm grateful for the free access of GR, and that's why I'm here rather than storygraph or other reading trackers, but from the GR standpoint, if it's a matter of long-term memory, then set duration parameters for image storage and/or messaging. After a few years, images are auto-deleted, leaving members/groups MODs responsible for content management.
if it's TB (terabytes) economics, then option "premium" levels for those members who wish to include external images.
Removing external links is a security/hacking concern that could be offset by the buy in of subscriptions. So many groups rely on spreadsheets to log info, something the GR doesn't offer internally.

They’re big enough and smart enough to solve any technical issues. They lack commitment to this site.

Even as we are deep in our reads with audiobooks, do you find your mind weaving in music? Thus the origin of our version of BOTM that we're calling “🎹Playlist OTM or POTM, where along with OR instead of sharing reading progress, as a certain passage, a chapter, even a character hits us ‘in the feels,’ we share songs that evoke or convey the section. It is your own interpretation: it can be a song, a whole symphony or just a lyric. Let's start!

PLAYLIST of the MONTH
When an author gives us some unforgettable characters, we crave more. We beg for a continuation of the MC/MCs story, more of the journey…because we know the author has more to share in their story. And soon, we have a book series.
So, if there's any interest in group reads, we would like to introduce a version of BOTM that could become an addiction … will we stop after book 1?
This is BOTM-First in the Series. What book series do you want to start or re-read? Vote with your recommendations in the poll and we’ll announce the January 2026 BOTM (First in the Series) on 12/30/2025.
